Why royal baby Archie's last name is Mountbatten-Windsor

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have finally announced the name of their baby boy, and although he doesn't have a royal title, he does have a last name. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's first born is named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and his surname is a nod to his great-grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh wasn’t able to pass his surname to his children. He had hoped that when his wife took the throne, his adopted last name, Mountbatten, would become double-barrelled with Windsor, but that was not agreed to by then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill. But a declaration made by the Queen in Privy Council in 1960, said that male-line descendants of the monarch, without royal styles and titles, shall bear the name Mountbatten-Windsor. So far Harry and Meghan’s child has not been issued a title, so he will carry that last name.
