What William and Harry would have been called

The recent birth of Prince Louis has got me hot on the subject of royal names. Not exactly the most impressive Mastermind expert topic, but I find it interesting all the same.

If there's one thing we've learnt from Prince Louis' name, it's that the royals don't think too far outside the box when it comes to naming their offspring. 'Louis' was recycled by Prince William and Kate Middleton from older brother Prince George's middle name, and it features in William's middle name as well. 'Arthur' appears not only in Prince Louis' name, but also in Prince Charles', and Prince William's. You get the picture.

But interestingly, 'William' and 'Harry' (or Henry, as he was officially named) aren't monikers you see crop up in every Royal and his dog's name. Why? Because it was all down to Princess Diana.

In the royal biography, Diana: Her Story, it was revealed that Princess Diana chose her sons’ first names. "I chose William and Harry, but Charles did the rest," she said.

The "rest" turned out to be 'William Arthur Philip Louis' and 'Henry Charles Albert David', but if Charles had have had his way with the Princes' first names, they wouldn't have looked like that.

According to Diana, "He wanted Albert and Arthur, and I said no. Too old!"

And that, my friends, is the story of how Prince William and Prince Harry came to be just that, instead of Prince Arthur and Prince Albert.
