A Louisiana woman fatally stabbed a convicted sex offender in self-defense after he allegedly tried to assault her in a laundromat, authorities said.

On Sunday afternoon, Nicholas Tranchant, 40, walked into the Lacombe-area laundromat armed with a “sharp weapon” and tried to sexually assault a woman, according to a press release from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The unnamed woman fought back and grabbed the weapon, using it to “stab [Tranchant] before fleeing to safety,” authorities said.

Deputies were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m., and while on their way to the laundromat, they received a separate call from a woman claiming she had stabbed a man who had attacked her, the release states. She was injured during the altercation and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities said Tranchant was also brought to a local hospital, where he later died. He was a convicted sex offender, online sex offender registry records confirm.

According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Tranchant was convicted of indecent behavior with juveniles in July 2003, and of attempted aggravated rape and aggravated burglary in May 2008.

He was released from incarceration after those convictions on Dec. 21, 2023, and required to register as a sex offender, authorities said.
