Woman Posing as a Piece of Meat Minces Social Media
A butcher shop in Australia is under fire thanks to a new promotion. In what seems to be an ad for the butcher shop, an unclothed woman marked up like a piece of meat poses in the shop’s display case. The Sydney-based model rests among the raw meat wearing some strategically placed garnish. According to The West Australia, she suggested the art design herself after being booked for the shoot.
Photographer Kym Illman posted the photo to the public Facebook page for Lancelin, the Western Australian town where the butcher shop is located. Over 180 shares later, the town is continuing to weigh in on the photo. Is it a feminist statement? Is there any artistic value to it? Is it simply an oddly conceived ad for a butcher shop? There’s even some confusion: One Facebook commenter asks if it’s an attempt to encourage people to buy meat or a call to eat vegan.
“Nice to know women are pieces of meat in Lancelin ….! Shame I used to love the place,” wrote one Facebook commenter. “Offensive and unnecessary,” agreed Lynette Cilliers. “Not sure how many health regulations that breaks but it’s also stupid,” agreed Tania Curtis.
For his part, shop owner Darren Gerrand simply wanted to do a shoot using his meat cabinet. “I had brought a fine-art nude model from Sydney for four days and when I mentioned it to her she thought it was a great idea,” he told The West Australia.
One commenter nailed what we can all agree is an important issue on the head — a serious waste of potential sandwiches. “What a waste of food,” the commenter wrote. “I hope that was all expired.”
