As if New Yorkers needed more inspiration to line up for the COVID-19 vaccine, the vaccine selfie opportunities just got more dynamic. NYC mayor Bill de Blasio announced in a press briefing on Monday that a new vaccine site will be opening up inside the American Museum of Natural History, underneath their famous blue whale.

"We’re WHALE-coming #COVID19 vaccines to the American Museum of Natural History!" the mayor shared via Twitter along with a photo of the iconic cetacean sporting a bandage on its shoulder to mark the occasion. "This site is for everyone but especially for our @NYCHA housing residents, cultural workers, members of DC37, and museum staff. Whale see you there!"

During the announcement of the new site, the mayor explained that the effort is particularly targeted to reach, "all these folks who we depend on to bring back our cultural community." He added, "This is an exciting new effort and I guarantee you a lot of people are going to say, 'That's where I want to get vaccinated.'"

"Having the vaccination site kick off under our beloved blue whale ... is very meaningful to all of us at the museum," Ellen Futter, the museum's president said during the announcement. "I know that in years to come ... we will look at images of New Yorkers getting vaccinated under the whale and it will be a snapshot of New York and New Yorkers fighting back, caring for themselves, caring for one another, and of the time when things started to turn for the better."

The new site will join more than 600 active vaccination sites across the five boroughs, which have administered nearly 5.75 million vaccine doses to date.
