Friends, lovers, Vogue readers and One Direction fans alike: I am here to inform you that Zayn Malik, patron saint of cigarettes and sad boy Instagram captions, doesn't like the Met Gala.

In a new profile with GQ, the former One Directioner and maybe boyfriend of Gigi Hadid called the first Monday in May "self-indulgent." Oh, and he also reportedly "choke[d] on his cigarette smoke" when asked about the fashion event.

But wait! Didn't Zayn go to the Met Gala in 2016 with Gigi during the height of ZiGi? And they both looked super bomb! And on theme! Well, friends, he was just trolling us all.

He then described in-depth his true feelings on fashion's biggest night:

The Met Gala is not necessarily anything that I ever knew about or was about. But my [former] stylist…would say to me, 'This is really good for you to do.' And no matter how strong you are mentally, you can always be swayed to do certain things. Now, it's not something I would go to. I'd rather be sitting at my house, doing something productive, than dressing up in really expensive clothes and being photographed on a red carpet.… To do the self-indulgent "Look at me, I'm amazing" thing on the red carpet, it's not me.

With all that harshness, he also told the magthat he "get[s] it" and "understand[s] that people gain enjoyment from it." One of those people, of course, is Gigi Hadid. And he did give her 2018 look credit, saying that she "stole the night."

"The stained glass on her dress. Everyone else just put a cross on.” For reference:

Malik, of course, isn't the first celeb to diss the Met Gala. Demi Lovato most recently described everyone who attended the event "fake and sucking the fashion industry's dick."

Well, we'll always have the 2016 Zayn at the Met Gala memories!
