Zendaya Says a Store Clerk Refused Service Because of Her ‘Skin Tone’

It’s seems like barely day will go by without some instance of social injustice happening, but very rarely does the occurrence involve a celebrity. Actress and model Zendaya, who is known for her outspoken nature when it comes to racial inequality, claims she was refused service in a store while with a friend because of her skin tone.
In a few short Snapchat videos posted by the 20-year-old, Zendaya explained that while shopping at a branch of Vons (a California based supermarket chain), she was turned away after trying to buy $400 worth of gift cards.
“So we just got out of this Vons. Now I am trying to buy a lot of gift cards,” she explains in the video. “There are certain limits or whatever so you can only by so much, but the lady that was helping us…I don’t think she was a fan of our skin tone.” But it unfortunately didn’t just end there, “she then threw my wallet. I can’t make this up! This is what we deal with! She literally threw my wallet and she was like, ‘You can’t afford this,’ is how she looked at me,” Zendaya continued, later clarifying that the throw was more of a “toss.”
This isn’t the first time Zendaya has called out those who she’s felt have wronged her. Back in 2015, Zendaya took to social media to clap back at Fashion Police host, Giuliana Rancic, after she said that the then 18-year-old teen looked like she smelled of weed for wearing dreadlocks to the Academy Awards.
Zendaya has also recently had to respond to comedian Julie Klausner after she publicly skinny shamed the star, writing on Twitter, “Zendaya’s ultimate retort to Giuliana Rancic is starving herself down to the size of one of her elbowz.”
However you feel about Zendaya’s latest claims, one thing is for certain, this girl is completely unafraid to speak up for herself. Zendaya said it best in the Snaps: “there is so much progress to be done in our world.”
