Canada has a rich landscape that provides for a stunning backdrop, so it's no surprise that many films are shot in the Great White North. What may come as a surprise though is the sheer number of blockbusters that have been shot across the country.
Several Oscar-winning movies were filmed in our backyard, the most recent being Guillermo del Toro's film, "The Shape of Water," which was shot on location in Toronto. Even Christopher Nolan's mind-bending thriller "Inception" was actually filmed in Calgary!
For Canada Day, we've rounded up 10 of the biggest movies that you may not have realized were filmed right here at home. So grab your popcorn, and see how many Canadian landmarks you can spot throughout your next movie night.
The Shape of Water
Director and Guillermo del Toro has filmed many of his movies in the 6ix, including the Oscar-winner "The Shape of Water." Prominent city locations that you'll find on screen include The University of Toronto, the Elgin Theatre and Massey Hall.
Twilight
Though it's set in the Pacific Northwest town of Forks, WA, this popular franchise was actually shot in Canada. Three of the four movies in the "Twilight" saga— "New Moon," "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn" —were filmed in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Folks will recognize the David Fraser Secondary School, Minnekhada Regional Park and the Ridge Theatre.
Brokeback Mountain
This Oscar-nominated film, starring the late Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, was shot in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. The film won Oscars for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score.
Suicide Squad
In 2015, "Suicide Squad" took over the streets of downtown Toronto as filming began in prime locations. You can easily spot locations such as Union Station, Yonge and Dundas Square, the Lower Bay TTC station and the Skywalk.
IT and IT: Chapter Two
While the film is set in the fictitious town of Derry, ME, it was actually shot in Port Hope, a small town outside of Toronto. Both "IT" and "IT: Chapter Two" were filmed here, while many of the scenes were also filmed in the Toronto area.
Shazam!
While the film is set in Philadelphia, "Shazam!" was actually filmed in Toronto. Many of the locations seen in the film include Danforth Collegiate, the University of Toronto, Woodbine Mall and the Hearn Generating Station.
Deadpool and Deadpool 2
"Deadpool" and "Deadpool 2" were filmed in Ryan Reynolds' hometown of Vancouver. For "Deadpool," the Georgia Viaduct was used to film the battle scenes, while for "Deadpool 2," major downtown streets were used for filming.
Interstellar
Just like he did with his other Oscar-nominated film, "Inception," Christopher Nolan opted to film "Interstellar" in Calgary, AB. For "Interstellar," several locations throughout the city were chosen to provide the backdrop as the movie's farm town.
Mean Girls
Not many know that the entirety of this classic teen movie was actually filmed in Toronto. The mall scenes were shot in Sherway Gardens, while exterior shots of the movie's high school were filmed outside Etobicoke Collegiate Institute. The math competition even took place in the Convocation Hall of the University of Toronto.
The Broken Hearts Gallery
Canadian-born Natalie Krinsky directed this rom-com, which was filmed in and around Toronto — even though it's set in New York City. You can easily spot the city's landmarks throughout the film.
