Every now and then, a haircut trend takes the beauty world by storm as the defining look of the moment. This time around the Bixie—aka the haircut love child of the pixie and bob—is coming for the crown.
"A bixie is cooler and edgier than just a straight-up pixie or a bob," explains NYC-based hair stylist Marie Nino. "It's longer than a pixie and unlike a bob that’s more of a precision cut, a bixie has shaggy, lived-in layers, texture, and a lot of movement. The focus is on the volume at the crown and on the soft, face-framing pieces."
With the classically chic vibe of a ‘90s Meg Ryan chop mixed with the current go-to style for It girls all around this in-between cut strikes the perfect balance between polished and undone. Celebs like Hailey Bieber, Zoe Kravitz, and Emma Corrin have already taken the plunge, solidifying its impact among A-listers alike.
What to Ask for
Rule of thumb: The bixie haircut (like most haircuts) can come in many forms, so hairstylists always suggest bringing in some inspiration photos so you can get exactly what you're looking for. "The best way to ask for any hairstyle is to bring in photo references of what you like," explains hairstylist Linsey Marmorato. "This gives the stylist a clear visual idea of your preferences and helps ensure the final result aligns with your vision."
Of course, there are a few stand-out characteristics of the bixie that can serve as helpful general guidance for your salon visit. Nino suggests mentioning that the style should feel edgy and effortless and the hair should have a lot of texture and movement.
How to Style
There are a few helpful tips experts use to keep this style looking fresh for every occasion. Nino recommends stocking up with a good texture spray or a volumizer. "For those with straight to wavy hair, apply a volumizing product, either mousse, spray, or cream on damp hair and blow it out roughly," she adds. "If needed, use a curling iron to add more waves to the hair. Finish with a texturizing spray or balm to make the hair look more lived-in and tousled."
Another great thing about this style? It's pretty low maintenance. Marmorato shares, "These services don’t require a full haircut but can help keep your style fresh by lifting bangs out of your eyes and keeping the neckline tidy, giving you a few extra weeks before needing a full cut."
