There are also some aesthetic conventions that you should follow to ensure your new rug looks its best in situ. "A runner shouldn't cover the entire space of your hallway," says Nicola. "Keep four to six inches on either side to avoid it touching the walls."
Can you put a hallway runner over carpet?
Yes. "There are no rules, but be mindful to regularly clean the carpet underneath the runner to avoid the area underneath flattening under the rug," says Nicola. "Adding a runner also adds protection to the carpet below it, so it can also be a savvy investment in that sense."
