Nobody wants to traipse mud through their hallway, so a durable, dirt-busting coir doormat is a good solution. It’s also one of the first things that visitors will see, so laying the right one down is a good way to welcome guests.

You don't have to opt for a standard brown option either: nowadays, there are a wealth of pretty designs on the market with bright, colourful patterns, vibrant graphic prints, funny slogans and even personalisation to help welcome your guests.

Coir doormats: what are the perks?

'Coir is a natural fibre that is hard-wearing, making it ideal for getting the dirt off muddy walking boots,' says Victoria Broomfield, furnishing accessories buyer at John Lewis.

As well as being efficient at removing dirt, the durable and absorbent qualities of coir-constructed doormats make them a great investment piece that'll last for years to come.

The material is crafted from the roughly textured fibres that you find on the outer husk of coconuts, so they're also an excellent choice for those looking for an eco-friendly option.

Can coir doormats get wet?

'Coir doormats are absorbent and can get damp but not drenched,' says Victoria. As coir is a natural product it will start to slowly biodegrade if it gets wet.

Victoria advises placing it in indoor and semi-exposed areas, like under a covered porch, in apartment entrances, or on the inside of doorways.
