While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does support the efficiency of N95 masks in preventing the spread of COVID, they do not recommend the general public wearing them. "Medical masks and N-95 respirators should not be used because they should be conserved for healthcare personnel," they state on their website. However, Last week CBSN Denver's medical editor Dr. Dave Hnida, the station's medical editor, explained that wearing two handmade cloth masks provides an equal amount of protection as wearing an N95 mask."The reason for that is you do wind up getting more filtration of viral particles," Hnida said. "It becomes more of an obstacle course for the viral particle to make its way from the air into your nose and throat and then into your lungs." 3 Consider Wearing a KF94 Mask Under Your Current Mask "I've just bought a new set of masks called KF94s that I really like," writes Tara Parker-Pope in a New York Times article about double masking. "They fit well, have added flaps to close gaps around the face and include a moldable band to tighten the fit around the bridge of the nose….The KF94 mask resembles an N95, with some differences. It's made of a similar nonwoven material that blocks 94 percent of the hardest-to-trap viral particles. But the KF94 has ear loops, instead of elastic head bands, so it won't fit as snugly as an N95 — although double-masking can help close any gaps."     In sad news for chocolate lovers, Belgian luxury chocolate brand Godiva announced it is exiting brick-and-mortar operations in North America. According to Food Business News, the company said it would be closing or selling off all 128 store locations across Canada and the United States by end of March.The retail locations included chocolate boutiques as well as cafés, which served Godiva-inspired baked goods like waffles, cookies, and the signature Croiffle—a croissant pressed in a waffle iron. The brand opened their first café concept in 2019 in New York City, and announced an ambitious expansion plan of 2,000 more café locations around the world by 2025. More than 400 of those new locations were supposed to open in the United States. "We have always been focused on what our consumers need and how they want to experience our brand, which is why we have made this decision."While you won't be able to enjoy the high-end boutique chocolate experience anymore, you won't have to say goodbye to Godiva's chocolate. The brand will still be sold at retail and online. Usually, you can purchase a pre-seasoned cast-iron pan, but if you haven't done so, fret not: You can easily season your cast-iron skillet yourself! And doing so is way easier than you think with just a few common household staples such as oil and salt.To keep your pricey pot good as new, we've enlisted the help of Pete Balistreri, Tender Greens Chef and VP of Stores, to show us how to season the kitchen staple before use. Heed the tips below, and be on your way to crafting more flavorful cast-iron-made meals at home!How to season cast-iron skilletsPreheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.If the skillet is new, wipe it with a dry paper towel. If the skillet is dirty, place it over medium/high heat with one thin layer of kosher salt over the skillet's surface. Heat pan until the surface is hot. Let the skillet cool and scrub it with a folded dishtowel with the salt still in the skillet.Remove the salt.Use a paper towel to apply a coat of vegetable oil or, preferably, flaxseed oil to all surfaces of your skillet (even the bottom and handle).Place an aluminum-foil-covered sheet pan on the bottom rack of your oven. This will catch any oil or particles that fall during the seasoning process.Once preheating is complete, place your skillet upside down on the top rack of your oven.Bake the skillet for one hour at 450 degrees Fahrenheit.Turn off the oven and let the skillet cool in the oven for safe handling. Once the skillet is cooled down, remove it from the oven and wipe it with a dry paper towel.Repeat steps 3–8 once more.What oil should you use to season your skillet?"Aside from the recommended flaxseed oil, you can season your cast iron skillet with any unsaturated oil," Balistreri says, noting that you should avoid saturated oils such as lard and grease. "Unsaturated oils include canola and vegetable oil. "Soybean oil is another great option after flaxseed given its high smoke point. Avoid using low smoke point oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and butter," Balistreri says.We can't wait to test these tricks before searing a ribeye for supper!
