This 2-Step, $20 IKEA Hack Could Pass for Custom Shelving
IKEA’s already the MVP of made-to-order cabinet and closet systems on a budget, but one hack proves that even a $7 shelf from the brand can transform into a double-duty, custom-looking storage piece that feels surprisingly high-end — and it’s the most simple styling trick.
Designer Elisa Decke, who runs the Instagram account @drellsky.home, recently demonstrated how to DIY a wall shelf with under-cabinet lighting near her desk area. To start, she used IKEA’s best-selling MOSSLANDA picture ledge, but rather than mounting it to the wall in the correct orientation, she installed it upside down. With the ledge piece facing the ground, she then added an adhesive LED strip inside the MOSSLANDA’s built-in groove that’s designed to hold frames or books. And in just two steps, Decke instantly has a sizable, well-lit shelf.
The MOSSLANDA comes in two sizes, 21.75 or 45.25 inches long, so you can choose the one that best fits your own space or even style multiple side by side (which Decke appears to have done). And this project isn’t limited to just home offices, either — Decke noted in the caption of her Instagram post that she implemented this IKEA hack in her kitchen, too. Either way, the flipped MOSSLANDA gives you a more extensive flat surface to style plants, pictures, small candles, or decorative plates.

Decke opted for the white MOSSLANDA shelf to complement her more minimalist aesthetic, but it’s also available in black or faux walnut and stained pine finishes. As for the lighting, she added a (color-changing!) WiZ light strip, which has a barely there white cord that she snaked down the wall and plugged in beneath the desk (make sure you have an outlet nearby).
IKEA’s MOSSLANDA ledge starts at just $6.99, with the light strips falling around $13. That means you can create a functional office or kitchen floating wall shelf with indirect lighting for just about $20 — and it looks SO much more expensive!
