For people looking to keep costs low, it can help to visit cities where the overall cost of living is already lower and the livability score is high — meaning you’ll get all of the amenities you seek but without a ridiculous price tag.

To find 20 cities where your travel budget will stretch the furthest and you won’t sacrifice quality experiences, GOBankingRates analyzed popular vacation spots across the United States. Using the national average expenditure costs, as sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey, the average expenditure cost for each location was calculated. The livability index (on a scale of 100) was sourced from AreaVibes for each location to help determine the quality of life. The weekly expenses do not include lodging.

Here are 20 cities where you can comfortably spend your holiday budget.

The nation’s capital is home to many working-class folks, which a low cost of living makes possible. It also draws tourists from all over the world, not only for its most famous house but for its historical monuments, outstanding museums and excellent cuisine.

Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed vacation spots across the United States to find the best places to spend your holiday vacation on a budget. GOBankingRates gathered the potential best vacation spots in the USA for 2024 from Travel + Leisure’s Family Vacations, Alex In Wanderland’s Best USA Travel Destinations and AAA’s Top Vacation spots in the U.S. The cost-of-living indexes were sourced from Sperling’s BestPlaces and include the grocery, healthcare, housing, utilities, transportation and miscellaneous cost of living. Using the cost of living indexes and the national average expenditure costs, as sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey, the average expenditure cost for each location was calculated. The livability index was sourced from AreaVibes for each location to help determine the quality of life. The expenditure cost was scored and weighted at 1.00 and the livability index was scored and weighted at 1.00. The scores were sorted to show the best vacation spots in the USA on a budget. All data was collected on and is up to date as of Nov. 27, 2024.
