This $30 Million, 50-Acre Garden Sanctuary on Kauai’s North Shore Is Like Your Own Private Resort

Kauai’s undulating, richly colored landscape looks prehistoric, almost otherworldly. As the fourth-largest of the 137 Hawaiian islands, it’s brimming with stunning beaches, dramatic coastlines, and majestic mountains. While there is no shortage of incredible homes across the island, few come close to the sprawling Ahonui Gardens Estate, which recently listed for a cool $30 million.

The 50-acre estate is divided into two contiguous 25-acre parcels, one that goes by Ahonui Gardens and the other known as Princeville Acres. Besides the existing infrastructure, what makes the acreage so sought after are the 10 luxury homesites that have been pre-approved for future building, either to expand the existing multi-generational estate or create a corporate retreat.

The seller is Charlie Bass, an engineer and co-founder of California-based computer networking company Ungermann-Bass, who purchased the properties in the 1990s. It’s currently one of Hawaii’s largest properties currently for sale and is situated in convenient proximity to the five-star 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay and the St. Regis Princeville resorts, though you might not ever want to leave the resort-like private idyll.

A long driveway lined with 108 royal palm trees that symbolize the number of beads on a Tibetan mala leads to the 4,200-square-foot Spanish Revival-style main residence, which anchors the Ahouni Gardens section of the property. Clad in white stucco and capped by a terracotta roof, the horseshoe-shaped home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

The airy living room sports vaulted, wood-beamed ceilings and dramatic arched windows overlooking the lush grounds. The free-flowing home also has a large dining area, a gourmet kitchen, an art studio, and an office that was originally used as a meditation studio. The home encourages indoor-outdoor living and has several lanais, an outdoor pool and hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, al fresco dining spots, and a vegetable and herb garden.

The separate, 1,200-square-foot Spanish Revival-style guest house adds another two bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as a massive 1,600-square-foot garage. Across the verdant, manicured grounds are manicured landscaping and endless lawn space, a secret garden, a koi pond, walking trails, gurgling streams, a waterfall, a hardwood forest, and a variety of avocado, mango, and citrus trees. It truly feels like you’re living in the real-life Jurassic Park, sans dinosaurs, of course.

Next door, Princeville Gardens includes a carriage house with an enormous 3,600-square-foot garage capable of housing a substantial car collection. Upstairs is an 1,800-square-foot apartment for additional guests or staff with two bedrooms and four bathrooms. There are also two covered carports. Across Princeville Gardens’ 25 acres are a three-stall horse stable with fenced-in pastures, a gazebo, yoga studio, gardening shed, and chicken coop.
