This 30ft Christmas tree in Coventry is extra special this year
Decorating a 30ft Christmas tree was never going to be an easy task (to put it mildly), but this year, a family from Coventry decided to do precisely that.
Debora and her husband Derek live on a farm with their son and two foster children, and 2024 was to be the year they would finally see a festive wish realised. At the heart of their farm stands a 30ft communal Christmas tree, a striking feature planted by the previous owner in the 1980s, who still lives just around the corner.
The family has long dreamed of fully decorating it, though its towering height has always been a challenge—until now. They only ever managed to get halfway up due to its size, but thanks to a local tree surgeon and the marketplace Airtasker, their Christmas wish to fully light the tree has finally come true.
‘The tree’s been here since the 1980s, planted by the previous farm owner,’ Debora tells House Beautiful. Its towering presence has been part of the farm’s charm for decades, and lighting it fully this year has made it even more special.
Debora spent 30 years in education before becoming a foster carer just over a year ago and says bringing joy to children gives her purpose. ‘Children are my life,’ she says. ‘That’s what motivated me to become a foster carer. I wanted to give back to the kids.'
As for the tree, it’s more than just a holiday decoration—it lights the way home. ‘My foster children look out for it on every return journey from school,’ Debora explains, adding that it can be seen from the A45 when lit up.
Debora hopes their story inspires others to find ways to bring light and connection into their own communities. She says fostering and creating shared moments like lighting the tree has brought joy and meaning to her Christmas, and is amazed her story has generated so much interest. ‘It has been fascinating that successfully lighting the whole 30ft tree has interested so many people,' she says.
