While decorating the tree might take centre stage, curating a stunning Christmas tablescape or a striking mantle display are integral elements in setting the scene for the festive season.

A fully decked-out Christmas mantle has a vintage feel, conjuring memories of festive nights gathered around the fire. Keep your Christmas mantle simple and elegant with a festive wreath or foliage. Alternatively, embrace the maximalist trend with a multi-layered display of tapered candles, ornaments, string lights and garlands.

"Curating a well-styled mantlepiece is a sophisticated craft and requires a dedicated eye for detail," Sam Greig, Head of Design at Swoon, told Country Living.

We asked the experts for their take on how to dress a Christmas mantlepiece for 2024, with ideas to suit all tastes, from vintage accessories and kitsch styling to natural, understated elegance.

Keep things natural

For those who prefer a less statement look, use a natural colour pallet and materials.

"To keep things simple and stylish, I like to use a spruce garland to adorn the top of the mantlepiece and dress it with chic natural style baubles – carrying the theme of your tree through to the fireplace," says Sam.

"Add in a few berry sprigs for a pop of colour, and don’t forget some lowkey lighting to bring it all together."

Create a vintage display

"Try incorporating personal or sentimental items alongside newer pieces, such as family baubles or handmade ornaments. This adds charm and makes your décor feel unique to your home," explains Sam.

Raid old Christmas decoration boxes in your home or those of other family members to find vintage treasure. You can also look in charity shops and vintage stores for unique pieces.

Interior designer Paula Sutton, founder of Hill House Vintage, added, "Mix contemporary and vintage styles. It's the perfect combination for adding personality to your decorations and achieving a timeless, beautifully layered look."

Bring the outdoors in

"Don't forget to look outside," suggests Sam. "Our gardens and local parks can provide some of the best festive decorations. Holly has been used for centuries as organic Christmas decorations, but you can also use dried branches, pine cones, fir tree branches, and draped ivy to hang baubles."

However, it's important to remember safety first regarding foliage. “If using real foliage, consider where these are placed," says Sam. "Avoid putting them near radiators, fireplaces, or direct sunlight, as these will dry them out more quickly." Fire and foliage can also be a hazard, so ensure there's ample distance between them and the fireplace is safe.

He added, "If longevity is important, opt for good-quality artificial foliage that will look authentic and last for years to come."

Use a complementary colour scheme

"A top tip is to stick to two or three complementary colours to avoid overwhelming the display. For example, forest green, cream, and gold create a warm, sophisticated feel," continues Sam.

"When it comes to festive styling, many lean more towards brass, gold, and copper tones to adorn their home. Alongside dressing it up for the Christmas period, these tones are perfect to use within your home throughout the year, too. Think golden accessories and copper ornaments for a subtly opulent display."

Repurpose everyday objects

We're all looking to be more sustainable in our everyday lives, and festive decorating is where we can minimise waste by repurposing items we already have.

Ribbon is excellent for dressing up foliage and wreaths on a mantle. Paula suggests, "Either buy in rolls or collect pieces of ribbon from shopping bags and presents and tie them in pretty bows on branches."

The interior designer continued: "Use everyday objects grouped as festive decorations. A collection of brass candlesticks with coloured candles look wonderful on display."

Your Christmas mantle is a great way to express creativity this festive season. An eclectic display of everyday items, vintage finds and decorative foliage will look stylish and personal — a little imagination can go a long way with a unique festive display.
