From Amal Clooney to Taylor Swift, knee-high boots are a staple in every It girl’s winter closet. You can’t deny the style’s sexy appeal, leg-lengthening attributes, and versatile silhouette. But how do you wear the soaring shoes? It’s less complicated than you’d think; discover some of my favorite ways to wear knee-high boots, below, including key closet essentials like snuggly sweaters, knit dresses, and wide-leg denim.

While I’m at it, I’m sharing a few of my favorite knee-high boots, including a sleek Sam Edelman pair, suede Vince Camuto option, and chunky-heeled Franco Sarto find.

Unless you plan on wearing skinny jeans like Katie Holmes, wide-leg denim is a knee-high boot’s best friend. The spacious silhouette lets you comfortably wear even your bulkiest pair underneath, while providing an extra layer of warmth. I’m currently obsessed with Just Black Denim’s leg-elongating style, but Levi’s, Mother, and Madewell offer great alternatives, as well.

When styling knee-high boots, I immediately run to sweaters, whether cardigans, mock necks, or classic styles. They soften the bold, sexy shoe, providing the perfect contrast. Quince is currently behind my favorite gray sweater, which makes for one cozy Christmas morning look.

Coats for winter? Groundbreaking. While they may not be anything new, I like to spice up my knee-high ‘fits with printed top layers that stand out in a sea of black, gray, and navy. My favorite option is the now sold-out Vince Houndstrooth Coat, which was worn by Taylor Swift. Thankfully, Lauren Ralph Lauren has a pretty good lookalike.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to kick dresses to the curb. Consider pairing your knee-high boots with a flowy number, whether long, short, or somewhere in between. I’m especially a fan of lengthy pleated gowns, which add texture to your look and give your shoes a peak-a-boo moment.

Cozy skirts have never been easier to wear. This is my go-to date night outfit during winter, allowing my boots to do the talking. Shorter options let your footwear shine, but longer versions are just as chic. Consider adding a pair of stockings for extra warmth.
