  • She called it her “summer glow.”

  • There are benefits and side effects to the procedure.

Summer is all about being bare-faced poolside, which is why Cindy Crawford gave her skin some extra love for the season. Under a stunning makeup-free selfie, the supermodel, 58, credited her “summer glow” to a cosmetic treatment that falls under a special kind of microneedling—and she thanked her doctor for the excellent results.

“Thanks @drkanodia90210 for a little extra summer glow with the Potenza RF Microneedling treatment 🧖🏻♀️✨” she wrote. “What other doctor brings you fresh mulberries from his tree and does chin ups between patients?! 💜💪🏼”

In the photos alongside her dewy selfie, in which she laid blissfully with eyes closed, Crawford also shared a photo of a plate of deep-colored berries and a video of her dermatologist doing chin-ups. In the comments section, fans and followers called out her radiance. “Gorgeous! 🔥” one person commented. “You have beautiful and glowing skin,” another added. “One of my favorite treatments!! 😍😍” someone else wrote.

RF microneedling stands for radio frequency microneedling which is a dermatologic treatment that uses ultra-fine needles and radio frequency to penetrate the top layer of skin. This creates micro-wounds that trigger the body’s natural healing process to boost collagen and elastin production. That uptick is thought to smooth fine lines, reduce pigmentation, and restore an even glow to the skin.

“It makes the skin thicker, and increases luminosity by making it smoother,” Corey L. Hartman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology previously told Prevention. It also has been found to reduce acne scarring and improve skin texture, however, multiple sessions are recommended for best results, Dr. Hartman added.

More immediate side effects include redness, swelling, dried pinpoint areas of blood, and minor pain, all of which typically subside in one to three days, Dr. Hartman explained. There also may be some temporary skin darkening, especially on deep skin tones, Shoma Datta Thomas, M.D., medical practitioner and skin care expert at Modern Age previously told Prevention.

Still, our experts say the efficacy of the procedure may outweigh the brief discomfort. “Overall what we see is that this is a very good generalized treatment for the population and the long-term risks are very small,” Dr. Datta Thomas said.

And it clearly worked on Crawford!
