The $6 Costco Dessert My Family Has Been Serving Every Thanksgiving for 20 Years
Although we spend hours baking an array of from-scratch desserts — apple pie, chocolate cobbler, birthday cake — my family’s favorite sweet at our Thanksgiving dinner isn’t actually homemade at all; it’s a store-bought pumpkin pie from Costco.
We’ve been shopping at Costco for decades, and while many people rave about the $1.50 hot dogs and the famous rotisserie chicken (both of which are fantastic), our all-time favorite pick is the seasonal pumpkin pie. It’s huge, inexpensive, and oh-so delicious. And this is coming from a family of bakers — I don’t think I could make a better classic pumpkin pie if I tried.
What’s So Great About Kirkland Signature Pumpkin Pie?
Costco’s 12-inch pumpkin pie retails for $5.99 and is a massive 56 ounces (roughly $0.10 an ounce!). It feeds our family of 12 (and then some) and is one of the tastiest things at our spread.
To put the savings into context: A can of pumpkin puree is roughly $2 or $3 these days, and that’s not counting the dozen other ingredients it takes to make an admittedly delicious Classic Pumpkin Pie.
The pie itself is made with whole pumpkin puree, sugar, eggs, flour, and a melody of spices that aren’t listed (there are soft notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger). The pie filling itself is incredibly smooth and firm and sits in a flaky-buttery pie crust that, surprisingly, contains no butter!
What’s the Best Way to Enjoy Kirkland Signature Pumpkin Pie?
However you’d like. The seasonal pumpkin pie hits stores typically in September (as soon as fall arrives) and stays in stock throughout December. Although it’s my favorite thing in our Thanksgiving spread, I won’t lie, I buy it throughout the season and eat it during the week (it’s just that good).
Before serving, we typically let it sit out for at least half an hour, so it’s not as firm, and enjoy it sliced, as is. If we’re feeling fancy (and we usually are) we’ll go in with a dollop of fresh whipped cream or our favorite vanilla ice cream and an extra sprinkle of cinnamon (also from Costco).
