8 Luxury Mattresses for the Best Sleep of Your Life

Luxury mattress is a tough thing to quantify, because it's a loose term that has different meanings depending on how much money you make and the times you live in. In elementary school I found out a friend's parents had a waterbed, and I thought that was luxury. Now I meet people who think anything less than Hästens horsehair doesn't count.
What I'm talking about in this story is online-retailer luxury mattresses, not the world of custom-made, super-luxurious mattresses. These are head and shoulders above your standard cooling mattresses, affordable mattresses, organic mattresses, and memory-foam mattresses. There's some overlap with the best hotel-style mattresses, but it's not one-to-one. These are top-of-the-line models from brands that ship straight to your door. Saatva, Casper, and all our other favorites are featured. If you're looking for the height of sleeping luxury, these are the eight models you need to look at. Pair whatever you get with our favorite sheet set, a smart alarm clock, or a lamp and you're good to go.
But why should you trust us? I mean, it's your mattress, after all. You could buy every single mattress on the market, take it through the free 100-day trail, and then return it until you've found the one you like. That's hard work, though. We've done it by spreading it across our sleep-obsessed editorial team. Even then, it's a pain in the ass. What you need to do is trust us. We've seen them all. Our editors have tested every mattress out there. And we've found these to be the best luxury mattresses on the Internet.
Saatva Classic
Saatva makes what I consider a Goldilocks bed. The company's offerings aren't that much more expensive than other mattress-in-a-box companies. But, it has a more old-fashioned luxury feel.
First, you get white-glove delivery, which you will not beat anywhere else you buy. Second, the company uses top quality materials like organic cotton covers, real steel coils, and durable high-density foams. You can do slight customizing, by choosing between firmness options, but it's generally pretty plug and play, which is how Saatva keeps the cost down. If you want simple, easy-to-buy luxury, I'm going to recommend Saatva every single time.
You'll see another Saatva, the Saatva RX, on this list for chronic pain. But I still think the Saatva Classic is the single Goldilocks luxury mattress. Rich people will like it. People who invest in it will love it.
RestorePremier Hybrid Mattress
This is the mattress I personally use. It works because my relationship has a sleeping dichotomy. I want a firm bed, my fiancée wants soft and conforming. Purple's gel grid is the best conforming tech on the market. It hugs and supports you without doing too much of either. And while I still consider the firm version pretty soft, it's good enough.
The first huge benefit of Purple mattresses is that they're great for temperature regulating. I sleep hot, but rarely will I wake up too hot on this Purple. The second is the support it provides, especially for anyone with any sort of chronic pain. If you need a mattress to hug you, I'd go with this Purple.
Signature Firm Mattress
For the premier hotel sleep experience, you go straight to the source. Of course, Four Seasons makes an incredible mattress. I love a firm mattress, so this one was an absolute dream, but they also make a medium and a plush that feel even more hotel-like.
Beyond the luxury hotel branding, it's all business here. Luxe foam and coils really make this thing worth the high price tag. Plus, the textiles used all across the outside a really, really top notch.
The Mattress
It's weird that memory foam is so widely loved, given that it's a plastic polymer. Latex seems a bit healthier, given it's rubber derived. But trying to find a great, luxury mattress that's made out of natural materials is damn near impossible.
That's excluding Parachute. The brand uses layers of wool and coils. That's it. There's no bullshit air chambers or layers of plastic. This thing is just wool, cotton, and steel coils. That might sound a bit too old-school, but the construction allows the Parachute to rival any of the mattresses with newer, trendier materials on the inside. There's a bunch of tiny micro-coils in the mattress that make it excellent at responding to pressure. And, at one of the better price points for the category, I'll recommend this mattress to pretty much anyone.
Saatva Rx
Sometimes, when you have aches and pains, you might be advised to find a harder sleeping surface, like a bed roll on the floor. But, we're not talking about that. We're talking about the most luxurious option to treat your chronic pain, and that is the Saatva Rx.
Saatva's bed for back and joint pain swings in the opposite direction of sleeping on the floor. It goes ultra plush. The bed as a sink down feel that's perfect for side sleepers. But, it's great for back sleepers because underneath several layers of plush cushioning, there's firm and steady support from micro coils, foam cores, and full-sized coils.
The result is a bed that hugs you. Instead of a hard sleeping surface, this is one that moves with you. It lets your pressure points sink in, but it offers some immovable support for those stabilizing areas of the body to push against.
Elite Hybrid
Speaking of mattresses that are great for side sleepers, Bear's Elite Hybrid is one of the best out there. The main reason is its plushness. It's perfect for side sleepers because the squishy memory foam lets every pressure point sink into the mattress. The coils are about industry standard, so it really is the foam that's the star of the show here.
If you're a stomach sleeper, stay far away from this one. If you're a back sleeper, you'll probably be fine. But, if you're a side sleeper, this is the mattress you've been looking for.
Wave Hybrid Snow
If you habitually sleep hot, we found Casper's Hybrid Snow to be the coolest mattress on the market. There's a bunch of Casper's tech in it, and everything has a weird name like HeatDelete or AirScape. The only thing you need to know is that this mattress keeps you ultra cool.
Beyond the cooling, it's a great medium mattress that works for most sleepers.
The Original
No, this is not a luxury mattress. It's Casper's base model. But, for anyone looking to buy their first $1,000+ mattress, this technically is luxury. At this price point, there's nothing else that's of the same quality as the Casper Original. I did a full review of Casper's budget mattress, and it was (honestly!) one of my favorite mattresses I've slept on.
What Makes a Mattress Luxury?
Besides the sleeping experience, we have three criteria: Delivery and customer service, materials, and durability.
Delivery and Customer Service: Ask anyone who sells luxury things, and they'll tell you this is the deal breaker. When you pay a certain amount of money, you want to feel taken care of. You don't want to call a help line and be sighed at for trying to ask a question. Saatva, with it's white glove delivery and diligent customer service, understands this better than any company on this list.
Materials: All these mattresses feature higher-quality foams, cottons, and coils than options you'll find on Amazon.
Durability: You don't want to spend north of $2,000 on a mattress that won't last a decade. All of these mattresses are built for tens of thousands of hours of sleep. These should all lest well into the next decade.
What To Consider When Buying a Mattress
The main thing with any mattress purchase is thinking about how you sleep. The type of sleeper you are has a huge impact on the type of mattress you should buy. If you're a combination of any or all of these, it's about compromise.
Back Sleeper: You're the lucky one. You can get either a plush mattress or a firm mattress. Whatever your personal taste, or that of your partner, dictates will work for you.
Side Sleeper: You should go for something on the plush side. You're going to have a lot of weight on a few pressure points, namely the shoulders and hips. A softer mattress will let you let your body sink into those pressure points while keeping your spine aligned.
Stomach Sleeper: You need a firm mattress, full stop.
