After 60 years of Doctor Who, how many episodes are there?
As Doctor Who approaches its 60th birthday (yes it's really been six decades) we've been looking back at some of the highlights of the series. From the classic Tom Baker days to David Tennant's reign as the 10th Doctor to the arrival of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor in 2018, there's been some truly iconic Doctor Who episodes over the years. But given Doctor Who is now 60 years old, just how many episodes overall are there? Here's what you need to know.
How many Doctor Who episodes are there?
Ok so get ready because there are in total 871 Doctor Who episodes, including the annual festive specials.
The first ever episode aired on 23rd November 1963 and the show ran for 26 years and 26 seasons, with seven different variations of the Doctor over the years. Just under 700 episodes of the 871 episodes are from the first 26 years of Doctor Who.
The show was then revived in 2005 by Russell T Davies and has been running for 13 seasons, with five different doctors.
When the three new 60th anniversary specials, starring David Tennant as the 14th Doctor, and the upcoming Christmas special have been released this will take the total to 875 episodes.
Where can I watch Doctor Who?
Good news UK Doctor Who fans, at the beginning of November 2023 the BBC confirmed all previous episodes of Doctor Who, including the very early seasons are now available on BBC iPlayer, which you can watch here.
If you're outside of the UK, unfortunately it doesn't look like the back catalogue of episodes is available on a streaming site. However, the upcoming 60th anniversary episodes which begin airing on 25th November will be available to stream on both BBC iPlayer and Disney+.
A Disney+ subscription costs £7.99 a month or £79.90 for the entire year.
