At 65, Andie MacDowell Refuses ‘to Disappear,’ Opens Up About Acting in Her 60s
  • Andie MacDowell opened up about acting in her 60s.

  • The Way Home star commented on the idea that women “disappear” as they age.

  • “I still want to be seen, but not for the reasons that young people are seen,” she said.

At 65, Andie MacDowell embraces her age and all that comes with time. She’s leaned into her silver strands (having said in the past that she feels more “real and honest” showing them off and that she’s “tired of trying to be young”). Most recently, MacDowell discussed how she refuses to “disappear” with age.

The star opened up about being a woman in Hollywood. “I don’t like the idea that we disappear,” MacDowell said in a recent interview with SheKnows. “I mean, I think it’s good that we can be watchers, but I think we’re far too important as humans to disappear.”

While she may be thriving professionally, having earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the 2021 Netflix series Maid and is currently starring in the Hallmark Channel’s The Way Home, MacDowell is not immune to society’s behavior towards aging. “I’ve experienced it,” she told SheKnows, “and if I’ve experienced it, believe me, every other woman my age out in the world is experiencing it.”

But that’s not stopping her. “I still want to be seen, but not for the reasons that young people are seen,” she explained. “I want to be seen for all the things that maybe a man might be seen for: my strengths, my intelligence, my knowledge, my experience.”

While she may feel dismissed because of her age, she’s not shying away from the number. “If I were coloring my hair, people might perceive me as being younger,” MacDowell admitted. “But, you know, I just don’t need that; it’s not something that I desire. It’s not a perception that would be satisfying for me. I’m comfortable being seen as an aging woman.”

She’s said that she does not feel “less sexy” as a 65-year-old woman than she did earlier on in her career. “You know, I still consider myself having the ability to be a sexual being, but it’s definitely changed,” she told SheKnows. “It’s a different feeling than what it is when you’re younger.”

She’s also seen the positives of having time to hone her craft. “I think as I’ve aged I’ve been able to create more interesting characters,” MacDowell pointed out. “I think when I was younger my looks kind of got in the way.”

These days, MacDowell said that she’s “found my happy place, and I’m just where I need to be.” We love MacDowell’s perspective, and can’t wait to see what’s next for the star!
