Richard Miller, potter and judge on Channel 4's The Great Pottery Throw Down, lives in the Surrey Hills with his dressage rider and trainer wife Anna, their daughter Bea, plus their dog Gus and three cats. When Rich isn't busy judging the best home potters on TV (James Stanley Watson was crowned series eight winner), creating his next masterpiece in his studio, or tending to his garden, he's probably planning his dream home.

But what exactly is on his wishlist? Eyeing up a move to Devon, Rich shares his dream property must-haves with House Beautiful...

Location

RM: The Devon countryside, nestled into a valley, two or three miles from the coast.

Property type

RM: An earthship, which is a style of housing developed in the States that has little or no impact on the environment around it. It'll be glass-fronted and dug into the side of the hill.

Non-negotiables

RM: A reed bed drainage system, solar panels, and a south-facing garden so I can grow produce in a lovely, big vegetable plot at the front all year round. As well as a ceramics studio, we’ll have enough space for Anna to keep her horses. It will be a little self-contained paradise.

Quirks

RM: The house and studio will be separated by a communal area where I'll have a conversation pit – a sunken seating area below floor level with a fire in the middle. We’ll sit around it, have drinks, and chat.

Luxuries

RM: A big, comfy sofa where we can snuggle together and watch films. For a long time we've had a leather sofa for practicality because Gus jumps up with muddy paws. I envy friends with big, squishy fabric sofas.

Colour scheme

RM: A lot of neutral tones, but I also really like mustard yellow, burnt orange, and green; it's a really nourishing colour.

First house guest

RM: Monty Don, because I’d love to chat gardening with him, although I’ll probably be a bit nervous serving him my homegrown vegetables!
