With Labor Day weekend behind us and chilly weather (hopefully) on the horizon, we’re diving head first into all things fall. Cue up the dark nails, pumpkin spice lattes, and, of course, cozy seasonal fashion. But if you’re not quite sure where to begin with your fall wardrobe, we’ve got you covered with some expert advice. Stylists Elisabeth Kassab and Cindy Conroy shared their fall 2023 trend predictions with InStyle over email, and we found everything you need from Amazon to try out the looks.
Of course, these are only suggestions, and it’s important to “take the trends and make them your own,” Kassab wrote. That said, she recommends investing in a “really amazing coat” and a “bold red sweater” to get the ball rolling this season. From there, you can pick and choose the trendy pieces that speak to your personal style and mix them in with your timeless classics.
Below, check out the seven fall fashion trends these stylists are confident will be everywhere this season and find out how you can get the looks for less.
Fall 2023 Fashion Trends
Mary Janes: Sam Edelman Michaela Mary Jane Flat
Shades of Red: Amazon Essentials Soft Touch Pleated Shoulder Crewneck Sweater
Color-Blocking: Zesica Ribbed Long-Sleeve Midi Dress
Gothic Glamour: Dorose Long Puff-Sleeve Lace Top
Long Coats: The Drop Noa Trench Coat
Wide-Leg Jeans: Hudson Jodie High-Rise Wide-Leg Jean
Mary Janes
$130
Whether you go for a “barely there strap or bold buckling,” Mary Jane shoes are “easy transitional footwear that can be comfortably worn all day,” Conroy wrote. The classic shoes were all over the Fall/Winter 2023 runways, according to the stylist, and the trend isn’t going anywhere any time soon. This Sam Edelman flat pair has a stylish square toe and a statement gold buckle that makes it stand out. The shoes come in 15 colorways, including leather, velvet, and faux shearling fabric options, and you won’t “even need to break them in,” per a reviewer.
Shades of Red
$33
Both Kassab and Conroy mentioned red as the ‘It’ color of fall this year. “Stores are overflowing with apple reds, crimsons, and burgundies,” Conroy wrote. Plus, Kassab said a red sweater, like this Amazon Essentials style, is the “perfect way to add a pop of color to your look.” The stylish crewneck pullover from one of Amazon’s in-house brands is “incredibly soft” and “not too big or clingy,” according to a shopper who thinks the “fit is spot on.” It has slight puff sleeves with pleated details and exposed seams for an elevated look, and it’s easy to wear with jeans, a skirt, leggings — you name it.
Color-Blocking
$40
$32
Another color-related trend, Kassab predicts that “color-blocking will be huge.” She specified the trend as “pairing different colors together to create unique looks,” like this Zesica sweater dress with two contrasting shades. The tight-fitting, long-sleeve dress is made from a ribbed knit fabric with an asymmetrical hemline and a flattering tie belt. It comes in seven color combinations, and each version would look great with a pair of neutral booties and an understated bag.
Gothic Glamour
$31
Conroy predicts that “gothic glamour is about to be everywhere” this season. So, what does that mean? Think: ribbon choker necklaces, frilly collars, sheer lace, and corsets. This mock-neck lace top certainly fits the bill, and it’s just $31 at Amazon. It has long, puff sleeves, a keyhole back with a button closure, and a soft, sleeveless lining underneath. Plus, a reviewer confirmed that the “lace is very soft and not scratchy.” Wear the top casually with jeans and black booties, or dress it up for an evening out with a black mini skirt, tights, and heels.
Long Coats
$100
According to Kassab, a long coat is “a staple in any wardrobe, especially for the fall.” Get the look with this trench coat from The Drop that comes in five earthy tones and sizes XXS through 5X. The machine-washable piece is made from a blend of cotton and nylon with a cotton lining, and it has all the classic features of a trench, including double-breasted buttons, an oversized collar, a vent in the back, functional pockets, and a fabric belt. Wear it casually over casual jeans and a tee, or style the jacket with tailored trousers and a blouse to elevate the look all season long.
Silks
$50
While silk is traditionally considered a summer fabric, Kassab thinks it’s going to be big this autumn. The stylist recommends pairing a silk skirt, like this midi style from The Drop, with “cozy, thick knits and boots.” Available in 24 colors and patterns, the pull-on skirt has a comfortable elastic waistband and an A-line silhouette. Plus, a shopper said it has a “nice thickness to the fabric, so it moves well without clinging to your body.” Grab the silky skirt in chocolate brown, and you’ll instantly take a summer look into fall.
Wide-Leg Jeans
$215
$159
No fall wardrobe is complete without a great pair of jeans, and Kassab thinks a wide-leg pair is “so easy to throw on and versatile.” These loose Hudson jeans are on sale for 26 percent off their original price, giving you extra reason to try out the trend. They have a flattering high waistband, a convenient zipper fly, and functional pockets both on the front and back. Wear these wide-leg pants with a cropped sweater or sweatshirt for an ultra comfy and stylish outfit.
