72,000 Retrospec kids’ bike helmets recalled for head injury risk
As of January 11, 2024, the United States Consumer Protection & Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a statement that the Retrospec Scout Kid’s Bike Helmets have been recalled due to not having proper coverage, labeling requirements, positioning, or stability that the CPSC requires.
“The helmets can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury,” the release noted.
According to the CPSC website, safe bike helmets for kids need to not block the rider’s vision, not come off when the rider falls, has straps that hold the helmet on the rider’s head securely and do not stretch enough to where the helmet slips off during an accident, and the helmet must “significantly reduce the force to the rider’s head when the helmet hits a hard surface.”
What to know about the Retrospec helmet recall
The recall involves helmets in extra-small and small sizes, with the colors and designs of Blippi, Blush, Brash Blue, Chameleon, Cool Mint, Matte Forest Green, Matte Black, Matte Navy, Matte White, Matte Burnt Orange, Matte Green, Matte Royal Blue, and Matte Whisper Pink, according to the CPSC website. You’ll also find that the affected helmets had a green hang-tag label with “Retrospec” listed when purchased, and the Retrospec “R” logo appears on the right side of the helmet.
While there have been no reported injuries as of yet, about 72,000 helmets in the United States are under recall, and 150 in Canada, per the CPSC website.

“Consumers should upload a photo of the helmet, showing the straps cut off, their initials, date, and Retrospec logo, to the recall registration page to prove destruction, and then dispose of the recalled helmet,” the website said.
