A senior dog is working to start a new life after being abandoned in a New York park.

On August 1, Cuse Pit Crew, a nonprofit based in Syracuse, N.Y., posted on Facebook about the canine named Max. In the post, the organization, which advocates for responsible pit bull ownership, shared the heartbreaking circumstances that led to Cuse Pit Crew learning about the pet.

"This morning, sweet Max was left tied to a picnic bench in Syracuse's Schiller Park along with this note. We met Syracuse Police and Dog Control there, who then got pictures and transported Max to the emergency vet for care," Cuse Pit Crew wrote on social media alongside several photos of Max and the note.

In the photos, Max, who has a brindle fur pattern, lies on the ground beside the picnic table he is tied to. Photos of the note left taped near the dog read, "I'm a good boy. I am 17 years old. My name is Max. My owners can't take care of me no more. Please help me!"

According to Cuse Pit Crew, the nonprofit contacted local authorities to help find a temporary home for the abandoned pet. While sharing Max's story on Facebook, the organization also noted how it felt this situation could've been avoided.

"Max is not the first, nor will he be the last dog abandoned in a park. We believe this could've been avoided if more people are aware of our services. We are not a rescue, BUT we will help problem solve with you to the best of our ability. We'll do it without judgment because we want pet owners to feel safe coming to us for help," Cuse Pit Crew wrote.

The nonprofit later updated the post, letting its followers know that Max had been placed at HumaneCNY.

Max's new temporary home shared additional details on social media about Max's current state and what the future holds for the canine.

"He was left by a bench in Schiller Park. We're not sure how many hours he had to wait there before being found...He went for an initial cruelty exam, but is going to a vet tonight for a full exam and bloodwork. He is a senior boy, older than 12 years, with a body score of 2," HumaneCNY wrote on Facebook.

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, "The pet version of BMI is called BCS (Body Condition Score), and it is a quantitative, yet subjective, method for evaluating body fat."

HumaneCNY deemed Max to have a BCS of 2, which represents a too-thin pet. Pets with a BCS of 2 often have "somewhat visible" ribs and a "severe waistline."

Stefanie Heath, a Cuse Pit Crew board member and one of the first people to help Max, told WSYR-TV that the dog's health is improving following emergency vet care. The dog will soon be placed with a foster family while he continues to recover.

HumanceCNY hopes to get some assistance from the community and other animal lovers with Max's care.

The shelter shared on Facebook that it is seeking donations to help cover Max's medical expenses because "We're just halfway through the year, and we've already exceeded our budgeted medical expense costs. As of August 2, HumaneCNY has raised over $11,000 for the canine's care.
