Accessorizing Your Bag Might Be the Most Fun Trend of 2024
We only just refreshed our annual Bingo card for 2024, and we're starting off strong with the return of charm-adorned handbags.
Personalizing your accessories has been A Thing for many, many years, from the eternal appeal of monograms to Jane Birkin's iconic bag adornments to the Fendi Buggies phenomenon in the mid-2010s. Miuccia Prada signaled this would be an even bigger plot point for 2024 when she sent a slew of sloppy handbags down Miu Miu's Spring 2024 runway inspired by Birkin; between that and her passing last July, many have taken to revisiting her legacy of accessorizing accessories.
In a "what's in my bag" interview for CBS, Birkin once explained, "I just thought it was more fun to hang things off it." Fans have been honoring her by curating an assortment of add-ons to their bags, like she would do to her namesake Hermès with "baubles, bangles and beads". The phenomenon even has a name on TikTok: "Birkinfying".
Thanks to the playful, individualized nature of this trend, there's really no wrong way to approach it. You can incorporate small ornaments such as keychains, fobs, lanyards, beads, ribbon and pins onto the handles, straps and zippers of your bag. (Birkin was known for stringing on necklaces to create that "jingle jangle" sound she loved, and even added stickers to her Hermès leather accessory.) Brands have so many fun ones to offer right now — Anya Hindmarch's Diet Coke pouch and Edie Parker's refillable matchbook are calling my name — so you can really wear your personality on your shoulder.
