Formula 1: Drive To Survive is finally back on our Netflix screens for season six, bringing us all the behind the scenes action from the 2023 F1 season, just before the 2024 season kicks off in Bahrain next week. This season sees Oscar Piastri join McLaren, the battle between Haas and Williams, and the ongoing feud between Alpine drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, but what actually happened between the two drivers? Here's what you need to know.

What happened between Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly?

Esteban Ocon, 27, and Pierre Gasly, 28, grew up together as friends in Normandy, France, living just 20 minutes away from each other. They came to know each other on the karting circuit and at one point were good friends. However, as mentioned in Drive To Survive, at some point in their childhood they stopped their friendship and instead become fierce competitors.

Episode five of Drive To Survive season six 'Civil War' focusses extensively on Pierre joining the Alpine team in 2023 alongside Esteban, and how their relationship impacts the team and its success.

During the episode we see the pair discuss that they've known each other for 20 years and that there is a lot of "tension" between them.

From the ages of six to 10 they spent all their time together karting, with them both describing their relationship as "very close" and according to Esteban the first time Pierre went in a kart, was in his kart. However, during a national championship in 2008 Pierre overtook Esteban on the last lap, beating him in the race (although he was eventually disqualified) and their relationship was never the same. It's then believed they developed a rivalry due to competing in the same races, and battling for championship wins.

Since they began their Formula 1 careers, Ocon in 2016, and Gasly in 2017, they've both competed on different teams, however in 2022 it was confirmed Gasly would be joining Ocon on Alpine for 2023, which brought back the rumours of their feud, which is brought up during the Netflix series.

During their interviews on the series, Pierre said about Esteban, "I know Esteban I know him like a younger brother. The only thing with Esteban there are a lot of problems and tensions. We both know we'll never be best friends."

He also added: "I know I've given Esteban many, many chances to make this relationship work . If someone doesn't want to be friends, that's fine."

As for Esteban? Well when asked if he would expand on the pair's disconnect, he said: "No, not really, there's a lot of personal reasons for these things."

During the 2023 season Pierre and Esteban crashed on the F1 racetrack in Australia during a re-start of the race. Pierre apologised for causing the collision and Esteban accepted his apology saying there were "no hard feelings" from him over the incident.

Where are Pierre and Esteban now?

Ahead of the 2024 season it appears Pierre and Esteban are now working together professionally at Alpine, with Pierre speaking in November 2023 that he was happy with where their relationship was.

While speaking on the Beyond The Grid podcast, Pierre said: "I’m completely fine with the relationship we have. I think it works well. I need my space, he needs his space, and everyone respects that. I think we both have a lot of respect for the drivers that we are. At the end of the day, I want to win, he wants to win. We’ve got to be hand in hand to make it happen.”
