Adan Canto’s character’s journey has come to an end on The Cleaning Lady three months after his death.

On the April 9 episode of the Fox series, Canto’s character, Arman, made his final appearance on viewer’s screens — and made the ultimate sacrifice.

After spending weeks missing following a shootout in the premiere episode of season 3, Arman’s wife, Nadia (Eva De Dominici), and his partner-in-crime Thony (Elodie Yung) are desperate to find him. In episode 6, Thony and Nadia are both eager to find Arman and his captors, and Thony is the one to get a final moment with him, per Deadline.

As the episode concludes, Arman makes one final move to save his partner’s life, paying the ultimate price. When one of his kidnappers tried to shoot Thony, Arman lunges, sending the car he was in plunging off a cliff, with no chance of survival for him or his captor.

Canto, who died in January at age 42 after a private battle with appendiceal cancer, had not filmed any scenes for season 3 before his death, the showrunners previously confirmed to TVLine, so his appearances in the April 9 episode were likely the result of “Hollywood magic,” as Jeannine Renshaw previously coined.

Season 3 had initially been slated to be an “Arman-driven season,” Renshaw told the outlet in March, so major changes had already been made when Canto shared that he would not be returning to set due to his health.

“It was a dialogue with him the whole time about how he was and how he was feeling,” Renshaw said. “When we first heard he was struggling and having treatment, we wanted to make sure we had a story crafted…where he could join us at any time and we could open it up for him. We had it all planned to welcome him back at the end of the season.”

The actor’s death was “so sad for all of us and a very, very tragic moment,” she admitted. “But we also felt we honored him in a really nice way.”

Co-showrunner Miranda Kwok added that it was “really important” for the series to “honor him as a person and also him as a character, and what he meant to the show and what he meant to fans” in light of his death.

“It was very carefully thought out and discussed so that we could tell the best story we could that would also honor him and allow our other characters to process his absence,” she continued.

Canto’s former costar, Yung, 43, told Deadline in another report that the actor’s death has “been extremely difficult.”

“It’s losing a partner, a friend. This crew is very close to each other. We’ve been doing it for three seasons…it’s been tragic, and it’s been very painful,” Yung said. “But I hope that I poured my heart into what I had to do this season. I know I did. I hope that I’ve honored our relationship, Thony and Arman.”

The show also paid tribute to Canto with an opening card during the season 3 premiere that dedicated the season to the late actor, calling him “our beloved friend.”

In the wake of Canto's death, Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment said in a statement that they were "heartbroken" by the devastating news.

"A wonderful actor and dear friend, we were honored to have him as part of the Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment families since his U.S. debut in The Following more than a decade ago," the statement read.

"Most recently, he lit up the screen in The Cleaning Lady with a powerful performance that showcased his artistry, range, depth and vulnerability," the statement continued. "This is an unfathomable loss, and we grieve alongside his wife Stephanie, their children and loved ones. We will miss Adan dearly."

Canto is survived by his wife, Stephanie Ann Canto, and their two young children, Roman Alder, 3½, and Eve Josephine, 1½.
