This budget hair range will cure your dry scalp Hearst Owned

If I didn’t work in the beauty industry, there’s no way I’d spend £30 on a shampoo or conditioner. Sorry but I’m a girly on a budget, so I’m always on the hunt for the best affordable bottles that do exactly as they promise.

Since bleaching off my hair in a wannabe blonde phase back in 2022, I’ll forever be on a growth journey. My hair has come a long way — thanks to reducing heat damage, hard-working hair masks and tape-in extensions to add volume – but I still rely on a good ol’ shampoo and conditioner to keep my hair in great nick day-to-day. As you’d guess, I've found the one that promises to reduce hair fall by 10x. Come this way, pls!

When I first tried the L'Oreal Paris Elvive Growth Booster range, I immediately knew I wanted to write about it. Not only is the entire collection sulphate-free (we’ll discuss those benefits in a moment0), but it has improved the condition of my scalp – helping to promote growth – and its made my hair appear plumper n’ fuller.

L'Oréal Paris Elvive Growth Booster routine

Here’s the thing: a shampoo and conditioner won’t magically grow your hair. How quickly your hair grows is mainly determined by genetics and how well you look after yourself, such as diet, using bond-building treatments (like Olaplex or K18) and cutting back on heat.

However, your scalp health plays a *massive* part in your growth journey, and this is something you can control with the Growth Booster range. The routine features three products – the Growth Booster Shampoo (£12.99), Growth Booster Conditioner (£12.99) and the Growth Booster Scalp Serum (£17.00).

They work together to stimulate growth and improve the condition of the scalp, but if you don’t want to buy the full bundle, you can use the individual products separately – or just invest in the serum if scalp health is your biggest concern.

Each product features the brand’s patented Growth and Strength Complex – featuring, aminexil (an ingredient used to prevent hair fall and to encourage growth by stimulating follicles), niacinamide (another ingredient used to prevent hair loss as well as to boost shine and softness) and ginger extract (you guessed it, another ingredient used to stimulate growth). Quite the INCI list, am I right?

Now, while these ingredients sound all singing and dancing for growth, they won’t actually grow your hair (womp, womp, sorry to disappoint). What they will do is create the perfect scalp environment to give your lengths the best chance at speedy, healthy growth. It’s the classic: you can’t grow a healthy flower without healthy soil. The shampoo and scalp serum will also stimulate the hair follicles and rid any product build-up, while the conditioner will strengthen existing hair fibres and reduce fall out.

The shampoo performs in the same way most do – it has a gentle lather, smells yummy and feels as though it’s giving my scalp a good scrubbing. But I was most impressed with how it make my hair feel post drying. My scalp actually felt v clean which gave a soft bounce to my roots, and even though I have hair extensions, I can still tell it’s making my hair (the real part) appear fuller and thicker.

Plus, bc the formula is sulphate-free (sulphates are a surfactant used in clarifying shampoos to rinse away grease), it keeps moisture in my strands for longer, reduces frizz and is gentler on my scalp, which means less irritation and dandruff.

The conditioner is brilliant, too. A small dollop is enough to slather through my mid-long hair and once dried, my lengths feel soooo soft and tangle-free. I even find it as deeply hydrating as some of my hair masks, so I often leave it in for five minutes while I carry out the rest of my shower activities. Ingredients wise, alongside the Growth and Strength Complex, it contains glycerin to hydrate and an ingredient that has an incredibly long and scientific-sounding name, to soften the hair and make it easier to detangle.

To top off the range is the Growth Booster Scalp Serum – a potent tonic that can be used on wet or dry hair to stimulate growth. I apply a few drops onto my scalp every other day, using a scalp massager to work the serum in. Because it’s so lightweight, I often do this in the morning and it never makes my hair greasy. The serum contains enough product to last three weeks – I'm up to week number two and I’ve already noticed a difference, and my scalp feels so much happier.

So as far as affordable hair care products go, I really think L’Oréal has some of the best going. Its Glycolic Gloss range may get all the hype, but if healthy growth and a happy scalp is what you’re after, the Growth Booster family deserves a spot in your shower cubby.
