Alicia Silverstone says becoming vegan helped her discover 'self-love'
Alicia Silverstone is getting candid about her journey to self-love in her new podcast, "The Real Heal."
On Thursday the 45-year-old "Clueless" actress shared the debut episode of her podcast, featuring Mary Waldon, a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker.
"This whole podcast series is about healing and love," Silverstone said. "Everything in this life is about love."
The actress revealed that discussing love and healing is important to her because although she experienced fame at a young age, she grew up without a sense of self-love.
"My life changed a lot. I had a lot of trauma and a lot of difficulties and a complex upbringing. All of those things left me with — well, whatever you want to call it — I had very little self-worth, I would say, and very little self-love," she said. "And so, here I was, this person out in the world and in the public but with very little foundation."
Silverstone explained that because she didn't have access to a therapist or adults modelling self-love, her healing journey began unintentionally. Having been raised to "suck it up and be quiet and have no thoughts," the star says she felt as though doing any kind of self work was "selfish."
However, things changed when the actress became vegan and gave up eating animals.
“I loved animals so much that I couldn’t face eating them," she said. "When I made this choice, my health changed and now things started to get so much healthier inside of me that I was able to hear my intuition.”
Silverstone's fans shared their excitement for the new podcast to Instagram, thanking the star for using her platform to explore healing.
“Very powerful,” one follower said. “Raw, beautiful, generous, pure. Thank you, spirit sister!”
“ I would have never guessed that was your story,” another said of the star’s difficult childhood. “Thank you so much for sharing. You’re an inspiration.”
