Amal Clooney Says ‘Yes’ to the Wedge Sandal Comeback

In case you haven’t heard, wedge sandals are making a comeback. And don’t just take our word for it. Amal Clooney just signed off on the style, which she paired with a pleated yellow sundress while arriving in Venice, Italy, on the arm of her husband, the actor George Clooney, on August 30.

Amal accessorized with a pair of oversized sunglasses, a woven sunhat, and a Chloé handbag, making for the perfect functional-yet-stylish travel outfit for the quick trip from Lake Como, where the Clooneys live, to Venice, where George will premiere his latest film, Wolfs, at the Venice Film Festival on September 2.

The classic wedge heel most recently peaked during the early 2000’s boho revival, however the arrival of the oft-mocked wedge sneaker may have just put the silhouette over the edge of relevance. For the last decade or so, the casual heel market has been dominated by chunky block heels, fishtail heels, and kitten heels.

However, wedges came back in a big way when Chloé creative director Chemena Kamali pulled off quite the stunt at her first fashion show for the brand: Kamali outfitted each of her front-row guests with a pair of Chloé cork wedges, making for a brilliant photo op and a bold declaration that wedges are back.

Amal Clooney, like most style icons, doesn’t bow to the demands of the trend cycle, and so there’s a good chance she may have worn wedges regardless of their recent resurgence. However, the stars have aligned in such a way that I feel confident to predict: Everyone you know will be wearing a pair of wedges next spring.
