📦 What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day is Amazon’s biggest and best global shopping event with deals offered exclusively for Amazon Prime members. The event usually lasts two days, with flash sales and limited-time savings to take advantage of.

If you’re not already a member, you can enrol in a 30-day free trial that gives you all of the benefits of a Prime membership without the full commitment. Currently Amazon Prime membership costs $99/year or $9.99/month for Canadian subscribers. Discounted rates are also available for students.

🛒 What should you buy on Prime Day?

With thousands of discounts to consider, it can be easy to get overwhelmed on Prime Day. That's why shopping and tech expert Winston Sih recommends zeroing in on certain key categories and products.

"I think people often find the biggest bang for their buck within Amazon devices and services," says Sih. "These devices range from Amazon Echoes to Kindle e-readers to everything in between...Often you see really, really great deals to get those devices if you're interested in having a smart home."

If you're not picky about having the very latest device, Sih also suggests using Prime Day deals to find even bigger savings on older models.

"New devices come out [and] there will be previous release devices that are really great, that still offer tremendous value and some of the latest features. Because new ones just came out, you're also going to see some really big savings," he says.

What should you avoid on Prime Day?

If you have your heart set on specific brand name products that aren't Amazon-exclusives, you may not find the deals that you're hoping for.

Sih says that unless you're looking for older models of big-brand laptops, TVs, headphones, or even clothing, you'll likely have better luck shopping in retail stores or shopping online through those brand name vendors on Boxing Day or Black Friday.

You'll also want to steer clear of third-party retailers when shopping.

"At the end of the day, those sellers are trying to layer in additional profit so they are less incentivized to offer big discounts," says Sih.

💳 How to get the best Prime Day Deals

According to Sih, planning ahead is one of the best ways to make the most of Prime Day savings. He recommends using the following strategies to get your online carts ready ahead of the sale:

  • Use Amazon's categories to your advantage: "If you're looking to refresh your your summer wardrobe or if you're looking for new accessories, you can flag those categories right within Amazon," says Sih. "When Prime Day comes around, you'll be able to see a lot of those deals at the biggest discounts at the top of the page."

  • Build your wish list in advance: " I often recommend that people put items in their wish list. Come Amazon Prime Day, go into your wish list and see what is on sale, and you can jump on those items," he suggests.

  • Subscribe and save for even more deals: In light of rising costs on just about everything, Sih agrees that "every dollar counts." He suggests using the Subscribe and Save option for everyday household items to save an additional 5 per cent on your orders.

  • Shop Lightning Deals: Amazon's timed deals only last for a few hours at a time, so Sih suggests keeping an eye on them as "they're often tailored to what you like and what you've been browsing."
