Katy Perry usually finds something positive to say when hopefuls turn up at the American Idol auditions. But she recently surprised fans when she had a less than excited reaction to a particular musician's attempt to impress her and her fellow judges.
During American Idol's latest episode, mom of three (and frequent karaoke singer) Sara Beth went in front of Katy, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie for a chance to make it through to Hollywood. But the California native was transparent when she shared that she didn't know if winning American Idol was her dream.
After performing Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" — a decision Sara Beth made because of her voice's condition — Katy wasn't impressed and asked her to sing her original choice, Elton John's classic "Bennie and the Jets." When it came time to deliver feedback, the "Roar" singer didn't hold back.
"Accidental American Idol," she said on the ABC show. "I feel like a comic strip character just came to life."
She continued: "Look, if it's not your dream, it's not gonna go far. Because I also respect everyone that's walking through that door who will lay down their life for this golden ticket, you know?"
Although Katy made a good point — which Sara Beth agreed with — about needing the motivation to make it through several intense rounds on American Idol, viewers were shocked at how abrasive she came across on TV. What's more, they immediately commented about all of the judges' reactions on YouTube shortly after the clip was posted.
"I am baffled by the responses. I respect the three judges so much, but she is one of the best contestants I’ve heard. It’s important to note that most people who love their careers didn’t start off with that career as their dream. Her personality is amazing and her voice is BREATHTAKING. I hope the judges realize soon!" one person wrote in the YouTube comments. "I love that she powered through all the rudeness. She's a ray of sunshine, PROTECT HER AT ALL [COSTS]," a different user exclaimed. "I love her singing and her attitude especially how she handled what they said to her. The judges were not very nice to her," another added.
Despite the way Katy, Luke and Lionel reacted to Sara Beth in the moment, no one could deny the raw talent she possessed. The American Idol judges eventually gave her a golden ticket to head to Hollywood, but folks will want to see how they'll fare come the next round of competition.
