Anthony Mackie On 'Captain America', Venomous Snakes and Fishing at Tyler Perry's House
In the latest episode of Esquire Freeze Frame, Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie talks us through some key moments from Marvel's long-awaited adventure.
But as far dangerous encounters go, the scariest one happened outside of his superhero suit.
Parts of the movie – specifically, the bits where Mackie's Captain America is talking to Harrison Ford, AKA President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross – are filmed in director-producer Tyler Perry's home studio in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a mock-up of the White House in his 330-acre estate that is regularly used in Hollywood productions (there's also
a farm, a vintage baseball stadium, several courtrooms, a prison yard, a trailer park, amongst other things. But that's by the by).
It turns out that Mackie is a keen fisherman who takes his gear everywhere he goes. So when he pulled up to Perry's house, he decided to decamp to the lake within the property and try to catch something. That's when the trouble started.
"I go outside and I see the lake, and I said 'I'm going to catch one of Tyler Perry's fish'," he tells us in the video. "I look down at my feet, and there's a water moccasin [a cottonmouth snake] about five-feet long next to my leg.
"I'm like, Oh shit, that's a big snake. And then I look across, and there's a bigger snake swimming across the lake."
That's when he finds a nest of baby snakes. It's spawning season, it seems. He alerts the animal wrangler on set, and she soon reappears with twelve snakes. "I went back after she'd caught all the snakes, and I caught two of Tyler Perry's fish! I got photos of those fish, Tyler Perry, and I cooked them."
