Ashley Tisdale Dishes on Her New Rug Collection and Nesting Before Baby Number Two
Photo: Frank Frances Studio
Ashley Tisdale knows there’s more to a home than just how it looks. So when the actor, interior designer, and mother of two—she welcomed her second daughter, Emerson Clover French, on September 6—began working on a collection with Rugs USA, comfort was a top priority.
“The biggest thing in a good rug is how it makes you feel,” the High School Musical alum tells AD. “One of my favorite things is having just a really soft, comfortable rug in my bedroom, because I suffer from plantar fasciitis from my first pregnancy, and there’s just nothing like that feeling of, Oh gosh, that feels so dreamy.” The Frenshe Interiors by Ashley Tisdale x Rugs USA collection, out today, features a variety of patterns and textures in neutral shades, and a few solid options in muted but beautiful colors like auburn and blush.
“I am someone who surprisingly has a passion for rugs, and I didn’t know this about myself until I designed multiple of my homes,” says Tisdale, who opened one of her dwellings to AD in 2018, another in 2022, and has since relocated again. Despite her constant itch to start fresh when it comes to her homes, when we spoke ahead of Emerson’s birth, Tisdale was focused on nesting and creating a nursery for her new little one. “Obviously, you truly don’t know what a baby’s personality will be like until they’re born, but I’m getting a sense that this baby is very, very different from my first daughter, Jupiter. She is so animated and expressive, and she’s really fun, and I am feeling that this baby’s a little bit more grounded. So the look of this nursery will be a little more grounded.”
Below, Tisdale shares more about her life at home.
AD: What city do you live in?
Ashley Tisdale: Los Angeles.
Can you describe the style of your home in one sentence?
Midcentury chic.
What is one kitchen item that you use every single day?
Coffee maker.
Do you have a favorite gadget or appliance or piece of technology in your home?
I don't have an Alexa or anything like that, so I’m a little old-school. I do have a TV. I don’t know if that’s a gadget, but we love to watch TV.
Do you have a bedtime ritual?
I do, yes. I definitely love to take a shower because I was once told that if you take a shower at night, you just let the stress come off your body and let it [go] through the drain. I also have my line Being Frenshe, which includes bath products with mood-boosting scent technology. The lavender cloud scent is what really gets me into, Okay, it’s bedtime. Also, I always made fun of the movies where the actress puts lotion on her hands before bed, but that’s me now. I have a really nice hand lotion I use, and I like to just set myself up to have a really good sleep because I have been someone who has suffered with insomnia in the past. So it really is about creating a ritual for yourself. Sometimes I’ll do a meditation before bed to really bring down my nervous system.
What is your ideal bedding setup?
I’m a Parachute girl. I just love Parachute. I love linen. I love the simple look and I love their colors. I’m not huge on having tons of pillows, except while I’m pregnant. I’m one of those people that loves to have a freezing cold room at night and so does my husband, thankfully. I love to be in the covers.
What is your favorite room in your house and why?
The bedroom because it feels very much like a spa. It’s very neutral and calming, and there’s bamboo outside the window, and it’s just a really safe place. I love to meditate here.
Do you have any items in your home that you brought back from a trip?
When Chris and I first got engaged, we went to this interactive theater experience called Sleep No More in New York, and they have these little playing cards. The whole point is that when you go with a group, you pick out a card, and then basically you’re supposed to be split up based on what card you got. We had just gotten engaged and our number is eight. We got engaged on August 8. We got married on September 8. We both pulled the eight of hearts, so we weren’t split up in the experience, and we thought that was so wild. So we kept them and we framed them, and it’s always been just something that we have in our living room or on the wall somewhere.
Is there an object in your house that has extra sentimental value?
I got this piece of art from Alzueta Gallery. It was in the house that AD toured, in Jupiter’s room. I got the painting after my grandparents passed and I thought, This painting is something that I feel like my grandfather would have loved for her.
What is the oldest thing in your house?
I usually sell all the furniture with a house. I’m always buying something new. Let’s see. What is the oldest thing that keeps coming with me? It’s probably my Abercrombie and Fitch jeans from high school.
What is the newest thing in your house?
The newest thing in my house would probably be a stool I got from Gallery Provenance.
Do you have a room or area in the house that serves an unusual purpose?
No. Each room is pretty purposeful.
If you could change anything about your home, what would it be?
I mean, I’m probably going to want a different style soon.
