New Asian tea shop aims to bring one-of-a-kind drinks, experience to Johnson County
While the Kansas City area isn’t lacking in boba shops, 24-year-old Wang Zou is confident his new shop is the only place that offers a different Asian drink.
Snow cream tea — the customer’s choice of floral tea topped with whipped cream, candy crumbles and other toppings — is the star of the menu at Flower Tea at 7699 W. 151st St. in Overland Park.
For an extra dollar, customers can order their drink in a bamboo stump, served with bamboo leaves. Zou says they can take the cup home, wash it out and re-use it. (Just store it in a cool place so it doesn’t crack.)
And yes, Flower Tea sells boba, too.
Zou’s shop opened this week, next to Monarch Books & Gifts.
Business has been good the first few days, Zou said. They’ve had a few busy spells. Customers have been enjoying the menu items, decor and traditional Chinese dresses hanging in the back of the store to try on.
“Everything we use is all fresh,” Zou said. “All the fruit we use is fresh. We make the tea every morning.”
This is Zou’s first business venture, but he’s partnering with Kassie Wang and Allen Liu, whom he met in the restaurant industry.
They’ve decked out the former SaBells Boutique space in faux cherry blossom trees and paintings of Chinese cartoon characters.
In addition to the snow cream tea, Flower Tea offers coconut green tea lattes, duck tea, passion fruit tea and more drinks.
The shop may add pastries to its menu once it gets into a groove, Zou added.
Eventually, Zou would like to open more locations around the Kansas City area. And while the prospect of having more shops is exhilarating, he said he’s most excited about bringing a new cultural experience to Johnson County.
Flower Tea is open from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.
