I Asked Food Experts To Name the Best Almond Milk—They All Said the Same Brand
You can easily find it at most grocery stores.
I found out I am lactose intolerant a year ago, and while there are an abundance of lactose-free dairy products out there (thank the heavens, I love ice cream!), I have yet to find a plant-based milk option that I truly enjoy.
I’ve never been the biggest fan of oat milk, I like cashew milk for heavier dairy products like cheese or ice cream, and I can only take coconut milk in small doses. So, almond milk is the only non-dairy milk that I can truly get away with swapping out for simple recipes like overnight oats or even my morning bowl of cereal.
With so many different almond milk options to choose from, how does a girl even know what to pick? I reached out to a few food experts I know to see what their thoughts are on the best almond milk brand, and surprisingly enough, they all said the same brand.
The 3 Food Experts I Asked
Christy Goldsby: Founder of Honey Mama’s, a line of nourishing chocolate bars
Huma Chaudhry, RD, LDN: Founder and recipe developer at A Dose of Nutrition
Caroline Thomason, RD, CDCES: Food writer and dietitian based in Washington, D.C
The Best Almond Milk, According to Food Experts
The food experts agree that Califia Farms Organic Almondmilk Unsweetened is the best brand of almond milk to buy. This almond milk can be found easily at major retailers like Target, Walmart, Publix, Whole Foods, and Giant Food. The product is only made with three simple ingredients: water, organic almonds, and sea salt. No oils or gums are added, and it’s BPA-free, non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free, and USDA Organic certified. This one is certainly for someone looking for an almond milk product that packs all of the punch.
While taste is obviously a priority for these food experts, this beverage's nutritional aspects also make it a winner for all three. With just 35 calories and no sugar, this almond milk beverage is a winning recommendation for dietitians and recipe developers looking to make their dishes a little healthier.
“This option is enriched with calcium and made with simple ingredients like salt, water, and organic almonds,” says Chaudhry. “The organic option in particular does not contain additional ingredients like gums and additives. I like how it provides three grams of protein and does not contain any saturated fat. This drink is great for cereals, cooking, and smoothies.”
“I love to use almond milk in curries, warm drinks, pasta, and breakfast oats recipes on the regular,” Chaudhry also adds. Some of her favorite recipes to make with Califia Farms Organic Almondmilk Unsweetened include a cinnamon honey chai, berry crumble overnight oat, creamy avocado lemon dressing, and spicy chickpea curry.
Goldsby loves to use Califia Farms Organic Almondmilk Unsweetened in her smoothies, which typically includes a frozen banana, coconut and almond milk, almond butter, cacao nibs, fresh mint leaves, and topped with shavings of a Honey Mama’s bar. She calls it her “blissful cross between a smoothie and a milkshake.”
I love to use almond milk for these crispy gluten-free almond waffles on lazy Saturday mornings or to prepare a tasty breakfast to go with this chocolate chia seed pudding. Now, with a great recommendation to buy, I can’t wait to try the recommended recipes from the experts.
