If you’ve ever tried to find which colors suit you best, you’ve probably turned to methods like seasonal color analysis and identifying your undertones. But aura beauty is the latest style trend that matches your energy to your hair and makeup by embracing the colors that appear in your aura reading.
According to Pinterest, aura beauty is set to be one of the biggest beauty trends of 2025, with the term “aura effect” up 35% on the platform. Described as a makeup mood ring, aura beauty is all applying your unique colors to your beauty routine.
Ahead, everything you need to know about the aura beauty trend, including the aura reading process, color meanings, and how to apply your colors to your makeup and hair.
What is an aura reading?
You’ll first need an aura reading done by an expert to identify your colors. If you’re not familiar with aura readings, the process can sometimes include your photograph being taken, which will visually show you the colors your energy is emitting.
Aura reader Stephanie Gunther of Twelve Month Aura takes photographs of clients followed by a reading to identify and explain what each color means.
“Basically, our bodies emit energy, and we have energy centers that run up and down our spine,” explains Gunther. “Each of those centers is called a chakra, and depending on what’s going on in your life, your energy moves between those spaces.”
Your energy is picked up by resting your palms on hand plates as you get your photograph taken. “That hand plate is picking up the frequencies you’re emitting, and through that, it then transfers the color of your frequencies onto your photograph, and then your reader can take that photograph and talk to you about what’s going on,” she says.
As for what your aura reading can reveal, spiritual expert Elizabeth April says it’s a combination of things. “The colors are a representation of you, your personality, and then also a representation of your chakras,” she says. “There is sort of a core essence of who you are embedded in your aura, and those would be your main auric colors. So your main auric colors are just a representation of your personality. Aura energies are also reflections of the chakras as well. So for example, if you have a lot of blue in your aura, it’s a good indication that you’re very communicative. You love talking or you have that sort of expression."
Instead of using photographs and plates, April can read auras by just looking at clients. “I’ve seen auras since I was a kid,” she says “So that’s just something that I’ve been able to tune in with over time. And then of course, interpreting those energies—what do they actually mean and represent? That came in my adult life.”
April encourages people to tap into their own natural abilities to read energy. “Even though people may not people able to see or read auras, there’s always this energetic color or transparent layer being reflected in each of us,” she says. “Aura readings are such a powerful tool because it’s kind of therapy in the way that it shows us who we are in a very objective way. I would read people’s aura, they would look at me like, ‘How do you know me so well?’ And I’m like, ‘I’m just reading your energy.’”
What are aura color meanings?
Below are the different colors that can appear in aura readings. If you have a lot of one color or none of another color, don’t fret. Gunther reassures all clients that there’s no right or wrong way to interpret readings. “The fact that you don’t have any reds or oranges, for example, it’s not a bad thing,” she says. “There’s no such thing as a bad aura. I definitely emphasize that because people get really nervous sometimes. They see something ‘bad,’ but it does not exist.”
Red: Passionate, bold, grounded; “red is all about stability, passion, creativity, energy, momentum, movement. It’s very fiery,” says Gunther.
Orange: Creative, vibrant, empathic; “your aura turns orange when you’re ready for something new—you’re seeking, you’re exploring,” says Gunther.
Yellow: Confident, outgoing, joyful, intellectual; “people who are big thinkers tend to have a lot of yellow in their auras,” says April.
Green: Balanced, nurturing, healing; “problem solvers that love to observe the world around us, more analytical, but also healing and balanced.” says April.
Pink: Loving, vulnerable, sensitive; “pink is actually very similar to green with a lot of that healing energy, but instead it also has divine feminine energy, which is nurturing, soft, and in service to others.”
Blue: Communicative, calm, intuitive; “bBlue is your throat chakra, so it’s all about your voice, your expression, communication, and speaking your truth,” says Gunther.
Purple: Spiritual, wise, sensitive; “very connected to spirituality, very tapped into the mystical traits of this world, and typically coming in with a lot of wisdom and knowledge as well,” says April.
White: Purity, peace, clarity; “everyone has white light in their aura—that’s sort of the baseline of their presence, and usually that comes through as just pure and peaceful and enlightened,” says April.
The benefits of aura colors in your beauty look
Both Gunther and April recommend incorporating your aura colors into your wardrobe and makeup. A lot of the time, you might already be wearing your aura colors without even realizing it.
“I personally notice that people tend to wear colors that reflect their aura too,” says April. “When I read someone's aura, they're like, ‘Oh my God, that’s my favorite color. That’s all I wear.’ Intuitively they’re just tapping into that aspect, and they’re wearing that color. So people are going to find that with makeup, it’s very similar as well.”
The main benefit of wearing aura colors is embracing those aspects of your energy and declaring them to the outside world. “For example, if you have a lot of blue in your aura, you’re going to really be acknowledging the importance of your voice,” says Gunther. “So you can absolutely reinforce the colors by wearing them.”
April agrees, adding that wearing your colors can help you step into who you are. “I highly recommend people really embrace their auric colors and allow it to show on the outside just as much as it shines on the inside,” she says. “Many years ago all I would wear would be black and white. Then I really started to get to know myself, and immediately my wardrobe turned to this neutral palette and a lot of green. And then I really saw my aura, and I’m like, Wow, I’ve really had a spiritual awakening, which is a part of that.”
On the flip side, if there’s a color you wish to cultivate, adding it to your beauty look and wardrobe can help. “If there is a specific energy center that you do want to focus on opening more, you can incorporate that color into your life to help open that space,” says Gunther. “Sometimes we get energy blocks. For example, if you wanted to open your throat chakra, you could wear more blue. You’re starting to connect with a space that you don’t have totally open.”
Easy ways to wear your aura beauty look
The possibilities are endless when it comes to creating your aura beauty look. Colorful eyes are an easy option that Gunther recommends. “There are many options in terms of having color and eyeliner and eye shadow and all that,” she says. “And if you’re not a makeup-heavy person and you just want to incorporate things into just your beauty, there are jade rollers, there are rose quartz rollers. You can use crystals in your beauty products.”
Don’t be afraid to experiment and wear multiple colors at a time. “You can really just play around with applying your colors, and seeing and feeling into how that reflects in your energy and also how the world around you responds as well,” says April. “You’re no longer hiding yourself. You’re no longer pretending to be someone that you’re not. ‘I feel bold, I’m going to go red.’ Or ‘I’m going to do a purple eye today because I’m really feeling spiritual.’”
One of the most obvious ways to wear your aura is with red lipstick. Both Gunther and April recommend the color for its bold and statement-making qualities.
“I love red lipstick, which is this universal power statement that society has accepted as sexy, strong, and powerful,” says Gunther. “And it makes sense that we’ve made that association because red is all those things. It comes from it’s your power, your creativity; it’s where you ground in your own body.”
