Avril Lavigne talks fashion, music and how she designed her Killstar collection
Avril Lavigne is adding "fashion designer" to her resume.
Last week, the Canadian punk princess dropped her first fashion collection with gothic alt clothing line Killstar.
Designed and handpicked by Lavigne, the electrifying release features ready-to-wear fashion, accessories and intimates. The "Complicated" songstress joined forces with the label to customize items "that truly speaks to her fanbase" and "recaptures her pop-rock essence," according to the brand.
Since her musical debut in 2002, the singer-songwriter's style has evolved through multiple eras from a skate-rock persona to pop-punk royalty. This year, the 37-year-old launched her seventh studio album, "Love Sux," as well as a 20th Anniversary Edition of her debut album, "Let Go."
In an interview with Yahoo Canada, the singer opened up about all things fashion and how she designed her latest collaboration.
Yahoo Canada: What does fashion mean to you, and how does it play a role in your musical career?
Avril Lavigne: "Fashion has always been a way for me to express myself and I do whatever comes naturally to me at that moment. Each album has its own vibe and colour story which defines that era of my career. With 'Love Sux' we are currently in the black and orange era and everything is black and orange!"
YC: How would you describe your personal style, and how did that influence the collection with Killstar?
AL: "My style is rock 'n' roll. I like baggy pants and hoodies, skate shoes and combat boots. I think you can really see that in this collection as it is a little bit of everything, but it complements each other well."
"I hope everyone can wear this [collection] and have fun with it."
YC: How would you describe your collection with Killstar, and how do you hope people will wear these items?
AL: "My collection with Killstar reflects the mix of styles that I love; there is an edge to it with the print, but it is all done on tighter, sexier silhouettes. I hope everyone can wear this [collection] and have fun with it. You see a lot of a skulls and skeletons which I love."
YC: What was the design process like? How involved were you in designing the collection?
AL: "I sent the team some of my favourite Killstar pieces and some colours that I love. Then I met with the team and the conversations took off from there! Going into the process, I knew I wanted my collection to be cool, sexy and edgy. You will see this with the maxi rib cage dress."
"Fashion has always been a way for me to express myself and I do whatever comes naturally to me at that moment."
YC: What is your favourite item from the Killstar collection and why?
AL: "My favourite is the maxi dress and the lingerie... and the tomb travel suitcase! I had it out with me on this past summer tour with Machine Gun Kelly, and anytime it came out, everyone would stop and ask 'Where did you get that?'"
