BAFTA moves its 2021 awards ceremony
BAFTA has officially moved the date of its 2021 awards in line with the decision to shift the Oscars back to April. The ceremony is usually held every February.
The 2021 EE British Academy Film Awards will now take place on 11 April, which is exactly two weeks before the Oscars on 25 April.
BAFTA explained in a statement: “This change from the previously announced date of 14 February acknowledges the impact of the global pandemic and accommodates and extended eligibility period. Further details on the ceremony will be announced later in the year.”
BAFTA has also been in discussions to allow films released digitally (without playing in cinemas) to be eligible for the 2021 awards, according to Variety.
Last week, the British Academy of Film and Television released plans to diversify awards through a universal set of requirements, which will also apply to the Oscars.
Mac Samuelson, chair of BAFTA’s film committee, told Variety: “BAFTA has worked for the last three years with the BFI, and has been consulting with AMPAS, with the hope being that between the three organisations, we can create standards that will apply everywhere.”
“It means that all of the various awards can be subject to passing diversity standards. That should in turn galvanise the progress of diversity across the whole industry.”
The British Academy has explained that its review of how the awards are voted for comes in the wake of this year's awards, in which no one of colour was nominated in the acting categories and no female nominations for best director.
The review could continue into next year, but will be confirmed in time for the 2021 awards.
