Barbie has become the biggest movie ever by a solo female director

Barbiemania continues to sweep the globe as Greta Gerwig's film breaks yet another box office record.

This week has seen the pink-hued film hit $850 million, making it the biggest-ever movie by a solo female director taking the title from 2017's Wonder Woman which raked in $822.9 million.

Deadline reports that the film's third week could see the film rake in an extra $55 million Stateside, crossing the $400 million mark by Thursday faster than the likes of Top Gun: Maverick and The Super Mario Bros Movie.

Barbie is now fast approaching the $1 billion mark and is set to potentially hit the milestone as early as this weekend.

Starring Margot Robbie as the iconic Mattel doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Barbie has proved a hit among cinemagoers amassing a whopping $162 million opening and breaking the record for the biggest-ever debut for a movie by a female director.

It continued its record-breaking streak into its second week, grossing a further $93 million and bringing its domestic total to $351.4 million and its global haul to an eye-watering $774.5 million.

The release of the film hasn't been without controversy, however, with Warner Bros US this week issuing an apology over a string of "insensitive" social media posts.

The studio behind Barbie has faced backlash from its own Japan branch after engaging with Barbenheimer posts online that featured imagery of atom bombs, sharing a fan-made poster on Twitter saying: "It's going to be a summer to remember."

Following the post, the studio issued a statement to apologise for the posts which have since been deleted.

"Warner Brothers regrets its recent insensitive social media engagement. The studio offers a sincere apology," the studio said in a statement sent to Deadline.

Barbie has also faced backlash from conservative commentators who have branded the film "too woke" and "anti-men", with media personality Ben Shapiro embarking on a 43-minute YouTube rant about the film while melting dolls.

Barbie is out in cinemas now.
