From Josephine Baker's delicate kiss curls to Marilyn Monroe's cropped glamour waves and even Marie Antoinette's decorative pouf, professional hairstylists have long journeyed to the past in search of iconic archival hair references. Whether that results in an instantly recognisable duplication or a more subtle nod, red carpets, runways and editorials are lined with historical inspiration year-on-year. In spring 2024, the retro reference of choice appears to be a playful and polished rendition of Brigitte Bardot's legendary beehive.

Defined by its soft volume silhouette, the 'Bardot beehive' is a quintessential 1960s hairstyle. Effortlessly dressed up with a headband or clips, recent celebrity iterations have proven that this lively styling need not be too theatrical.

A prime example of the modern 'Bardot beehive' is Nicola Coughlan's latest Fendi campaign, in which the Harper's Bazaar UK cover star and Bridgerton actress' blonde hair is gently teased at the crown, styled with a glossy hairband and finished with light tousled texture. Her simple black attire allows the hair to take centre stage, making a convincing case for using statement hairstyles to elevate a classic or casual outfit.

“The look was very much '60s inspired, taking elements from icons like Jean Shrimpton and Brigitte Bardot," says celebrity hairstylist Patrick Wilson. "It was set with a classic tong using the Ghd Curve Soft Tong. That really gave it the formation to the style. A great set means that you can keep brushing your hair and the texture just gets better and better, but without that foundation the look won’t hold. It’s the teasing at the roots and the shape that gives us a nod to the beehive."

Zendaya also debuted a polish take on the trend during her Challengers press tour in Los Angeles last week. The actress paired a dramatic beehive styling with a pale pink bow, cohesive with her custom Jacquemus two-piece. While this fluffy alternate is bold to say the least, it does concur that the 'Bardot beehive' is ultimately trendy for spring. Not to mention, Versace also predicted the vintage look's return with a series of subtle, accessorised beehives at Fashion Week SS24.

If the addition of a statement accessory feels too juvenile for a formal occasion, a bare 'do with subtle lift at the crown, as seen on Kaia Gerber and Marisa Abela during the Back To Black press tour, is a wearable way to take inspiration from the look. Simply backcomb the root of your hair, or invest in a quality volumising spray, and see how a touch of additional height will transform an everyday styling. The best part? It can be worn with your hair down, in a ponytail or, as seen on Zendaya, the softest vintage half-up bouffant.
