‘Batgirl’ is breaking the status quo over at DC Comics.

With a confident, crime-fighting Barbara Gordon as the protagonist of the popular feminist comic, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the storyline for this graphic text would continue to be progressive.

Back in 2013, the publication made headlines when Alysia Yeoh came out. Now it’s back in the spotlight with the first ever transgender wedding.

“This was something we talked about when we took the book over and we didn’t know if we were ever going to get a chance to play it out, because we had so much heavy lifting to do in our first arc that there wasn’t room to play up this plot,” Brenden Fletcher, co-writer for the comic told MTV News. “So thankfully we’ve gotten to continue working on the series, and we’ve been able to do these things that we’ve always wanted to do, [including] the wedding.”

In the issue, Alyssa marries Jo, an activist who she began dating in a 2014 issue. She wears a floor-length white dress with lace bodice while Jo opts for a suit.

“For visual interest I didn’t want to have both the the girls in wedding dresses, and I think Jo’s personality fits a suit,” artist Babs Tarr told MTV News. “I just thought — it’s cute. I did it ’cuz it’s cute!”

While Alyssa and Jo will be absent from the next few issues – they’ll be honeymooning – this isn’t the end of their story. Creators have hinted that there will be a new twist involving Alyssa in issue #50 so stay tuned for more exciting storylines to come from ‘Batgirl.’
