While some fast food fish sandwiches are available all year round, their popularity seems to always skyrocket around springtime. During the Lenten season, which lasts from March to April, many folks are unable to eat meat on Fridays, so some fast food chains like to offer fish sandwiches for those who can’t indulge in their favorite burgers or chicken sandwiches.

Last year, I was tasked with trying as many fish sandwiches as possible to see which one was truly the best. But as somebody who isn’t a big fan of fish sandwiches, I wasn’t expecting to find one that I was drawn to or downright enjoyed—until I tried Long John Silver’s Fish Sandwich.

Long John Silver's Has the Best Fish Sandwich

Imagine: you’ve eaten ten (yes, ten) fish sandwiches in one sitting and have been underwhelmed. Sure, there are a couple of good ones, but nothing is jumping out or has that "wow" factor that you’re looking for. You have one sandwich left. Apprehensively, you take a bite, then pause. This one is actually really good. Like, really good.

I hadn’t had Long John Silver's before jumping into my fish sandwich taste test, so I was extremely surprised to see that out of the big contenders like Burger King, McDonald’s, and even Arby’s, it won the number one spot. So, what about this sandwich makes it so good?

To start, this is a classic battered Alaskan pollack fillet. It sits atop a toasted bun with tangy crinkle-cut pickles and tartar sauce. Compared to the other options, the breading on the fish itself is just right—not too thick and not too thin. It's also pleasantly crispy, which is what I was looking for since most patties are prone to getting soggy when slathered in sauce. But honestly? If this sandwich was drenched in the tartar sauce, I wouldn’t complain. The sauce was the perfect combination of sweet and tangy, thanks to the dill.

If you’re participating in meatless Fridays or are simply looking for a fish sandwich quick fix, I can’t recommend Long John Silver’s option enough. After all, it makes sense that a seafood fast food chain would do it better than anybody else.
