June is Pride Month, and while a return to in-person festivities is an exciting way to celebrate, sometimes a more low-key celebration is the way to go — especially since there's never a bad time to curl up on the couch with a movie and a bowl of popcorn.
LGBTQ+ representation in movies and on shows has come a long way in recent years, as mainstream media is finally moving beyond including queer individuals as tokenizing tropes. There are now fully realized roles that don't just focus on queer trauma, but also explore genres like romance, comedy and adventure.
From "Schitt's Creek" — a Canadian made series that scored both international and Canadian recognition to Deepa Mehta's "Funny Boy," to Amazon Prime Video's first scripted series "The Lake," there are several titles to choose from if you're looking to indulge in an LGBTQ-friendly movie night at home.

The Half of It
This coming-of-age dramedy is written and directed by Alice Wu. When smart but cash-strapped teen Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) agrees to write a love letter for a jock, she doesn't expect to become his friend — or fall for his crush.

Recounted mostly through animation to protect his identity, Amin opens up about his past as a child refugee from Afghanistan. He looks back on his life as he grapples with a secret he's kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he's built for himself and his future husband.
I Care a Lot
This dark comedy follows a shady legal guardian Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike), who lands in hot water when she tries to swindle a woman with ties to a powerful gangster. She not only risks her life, but that of her partner (Eiza Gonzalez) as well.

Funny Boy
Based on the novel by Shyam Selvadurai and set in Sri Lanka in the 1970s and 80s, Deepa Mehta's "Funny Boy" explores the sexual awakening of a boy named Arjie set against the backdrop of the civil war. For this film, Mehta won the Best Director award at the Canadian Screen Awards.
Schitt's Creek
This multi award-winning series is also a must-watch. When the filthy-rich Roses suddenly find themselves broke, they're forced to rebuild their empire within their only remaining asset — Schitt's Creek.
