Kamalame Cay has been a hidden paradise in the Bahamas since 1996, though its pristine beaches and lush tropical landscape might convince you it's been untouched for millennia. Nestled on a private 96-acre island just off Andros and accessible only by seaplane, helicopter, or boat, this secluded haven has been welcoming discerning guests looking for a remote sanctuary for almost three decades.

On what feels like your own private island, guests savor the farm-to-table cuisine at the Great House, indulge in treatments at the overwater spa (the only one in the Bahamas), and explore the world's third-largest barrier reef just offshore. The resort's collection of beautifully appointed beachfront bungalows, cottages, and villas makes it tempting to never leave your own slice of paradise, were it not for the allure of bonefishing, snorkeling, and miles of soft sand waiting just beyond your doorstep.

"What makes Kamalame Cay unique is our ability to offer barefoot luxury in its truest form," says Michael King-Hew, the resort's managing director. "We provide five-star amenities and service while maintaining an intimate, 'home away from home' atmosphere. Our staff doesn't just remember guests' names; they recall their favorite cocktails and preferred dinner spots on the beach. When you stay at Kamalame Cay, you're not just visiting the Bahamas—you're experiencing the kind of unspoiled island life that's becoming increasingly rare in today's world."

Here, we speak with King-Hew about the island's best accommodations and how Kamalame translates "off-the-grid" into the pinnacle of relaxed paradise.

What do you consider to be the best room at the property and why?

My favorite right now is Buttonwood. It's the newest addition to our villa collection and is exceptional. Extremely private and perched on one of the highest points of the Cay, it has stunning panoramic views of the ocean from a series of huge wrap around porches and terraces. Interiors are beautifully curated and true to the chic island vibes of the Cay with an unpretentious luxury that makes you feel right at home.

How much does it cost per night?

$4,585 a night.

How would you describe the guests and vibe at the hotel?

Kamalame is all about curating and collecting memories and magic. A place where a swimsuit and sarong count as dressed for dinner, every guest is treated as family, and the atmosphere is as much gracious vibe (and chilled rosé) as spectacular setting.

What feeling about Kamalame Cay do you hope to impart to guests?

A rediscovery of what’s really important and a greater appreciation of life’s simple pleasures—the very essence of life on the Cay. Bright blue skies, long walks on white sand beaches, dinner or a movie under the coconut trees, languid lunches with good food and great conversation, star watching, or warm cookies enjoyed with a book.

What’s a local attraction that you always recommend?

Attend one of our monthly luncheons on the beach or take a trip offshore to the world's third largest barrier reef. It plunges some 6,000 feet straight to the bottom of the 'Tongue of the Ocean,' where divers and snorkelers can explore its myriad canyons, caves, blue holes, and sand chutes. This area is home to a wide range of sea life, with sightings of dolphins, turtles, eagle rays, tuna and stunning corals.
