If you're among those rare breeds of people who, despite the snow, slush and ice, continue to hit the pavement for an outdoor run, my hat (more specifically, my toque) goes off to you.

That's because winter running in Canada is no joke. Between sub-zero temperatures and sky-high snowfalls, Mother Nature isn't exactly on the side of runners.

Therefore, before you head out the door this winter, you'll want to make sure you're wearing the right gear for the elements, which, alongside a layer or two, includes a proper pair of winter running shoes.

What to look for in winter running shoes

The two main features to look for in winter running shoes are a "waterproof [design] and winter-specific traction," says Sydney Guloien-Olmsted of BlackToe Running.

Rather than relying on the same pair of shoes you wear during the warmer months, Guloien-Olmsted recommends investing in a pair of waterproof runners.

Running shoes "only last about 500 kilometres," so "we always suggest having a rotation of shoes [on hand] that vary in characteristics and features."

If "the prospect of damp feet doesn't deter you, a regular shoe can work," however, a waterproof sneaker with winter-specific traction is better for "nasty days," she says.

Ultimately, "the best winter running shoes are the ones that work for you," however, like all things Canadian weather-related, it's better to come prepared.
