Beyoncé Unveils New Merch at Coachella

Inspired by HBCUs.

On Saturday night, April 14, Coachella attendees were treated to an incredible Beyoncé performance featuring a full band, a Destiny’s Child reunion, cameos from Jay-Z and Solange, and epic costume changes including custom Balmain pieces, sparkly fringe Louboutin boots and the iconic “Survivor” camo looks, updated for 2018. It was truly a performance that will go down in the books as one of the best of all time, basically renaming the festival “Beychella” forever. Bey even made history as the first black woman to headline the festival. And if all of that wasn't enough, she also unveiled a new line of exclusive ‘Chella merchandise for those lucky fans. If you’re not able to go to the festival next weekend for her second show, you may want to Venmo someone who is so you can get your hands on it. It’s that good.

The merchandise reportedly didn’t go on sale until Bey played at 11:05 p.m., so fans weren’t able to scoop it up and put it on before the show. A few fans snapped pics so the rest of us at home could see what was for sale, and it’s pretty cool — and definitely not inexpensive!

The lineup includes tees and tanks with a pyramid printed on them, reading “BEYONCÉ COACHELLA CA ’18,” and tees with “BΔK” emblazoned across the front; those appear to be in the $40-50 range, in line with other Bey merch. The pièce de résistance in the lineup was a varsity jacket featuring the design Bey herself wore onstage: the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, a panther, a raised fist, and a bee. The jacket will reportedly set you back $450, but, y’know … it’s Beyoncé we’re talking here. Much like the performance which featured a drumline and a faux Beyoncé sorority and Bug-a-Boo fraternity, the merch seemed to be inspired by historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).

On her website, Bey posted a ton of photos of backstage rehearsal, behind-the-scenes moments, and breathtaking onstage action shots, including some of Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing, who designed the five custom looks she wore. In the pics, Bey and Olivier are seen inspecting costumes in the show’s signature yellow palette, and we have a feeling their creative minds probably had some serious impact on the merch too. We also spotted a Spelman sweatshirt on the rack, which perhaps speaks to the significant influence HBCUs had on the designs. While the Beychella tees may not be Balmain label, it’s pretty clear that Beyoncé and Olivier worked together to produce something meaningful and unique for the show, and we have a feeling it’s going to be pretty difficult to get your hands on this merch if you’re not at Coachella. (Nothing is currently showing up online.) We don’t blame you if you’re already thinking about getting tickets for next weekend’s show!
